Zusammenfassung: | How does one go about organizing something as complicated as a strategic-missile or space-exploration program? Stephen B. Johnson here explores the answer -- systems management -- in a groundbreaking study that involves Air Force planners, scientists, technical specialists, and, eventually, bureaucrats. Taking a comparative approach, Johnson focuses on the theory, or intellectual history, of "systems engineering" as such, its origins in the Air Force's Cold War ICBM efforts, and its migration to not only NASA but the European Space Agency. Exploring the history and politics of aerospace development and weapons procurement, Johnson examines how scientists and engineers created the systems management process to coordinate large-scale technology development, and how managers and military officers gained control of that process. "Those funding the race demanded results," Johnson explains. "In response, development organizations created what few expected and what even fewer wanted -- a bureaucracy for innovation. To begin to understand this apparent contradiction in terms, we must first understand the exacting nature of space technologies and the concerns of those who create them." |

To begin to understand this apparent contradiction in terms, we must first understand the exacting nature of space technologies and the concerns of those who create them."</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="505" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Introduction: management and the control of research and development -- Social and technical issues of spaceflight -- Creating concurrency -- From concurrency to systems management -- JPL's journey from missiles to space -- Organizing the manned space program -- Organizing ELDO for failure -- ESRO's American bridge across the management gap -- Coordination and control of high-tech research and development.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Astronautics, Military</subfield><subfield code="z">United States</subfield><subfield code="x">Management.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Astronautics</subfield><subfield code="z">United States</subfield><subfield code="x">Management.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Astronautics, Military</subfield><subfield code="z">Europe</subfield><subfield code="x">Management.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Astronautics</subfield><subfield code="z">Europe</subfield><subfield code="x">Management.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Astronautique militaire</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis</subfield><subfield code="x">Gestion.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Astronautique</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis</subfield><subfield code="x">Gestion.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Astronautique militaire</subfield><subfield code="z">Europe</subfield><subfield code="x">Gestion.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Astronautique</subfield><subfield code="z">Europe</subfield><subfield code="x">Gestion.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">TECHNOLOGY & ENGINEERING</subfield><subfield code="x">Aeronautics & Astronautics.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Astronautics</subfield><subfield code="x">Management</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Europe</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJxCxPbbk4CPJDQJb4r6rq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtxgQXMWqmjMjjwXRHgrq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">The secret of Apollo (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGvkxfwfFH3ctDjcQX98fm</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Johnson, Stephen B., 1959-</subfield><subfield code="t">Secret of Apollo.</subfield><subfield code="d">Baltimore : Johns Hopkins University Press, 2002</subfield><subfield code="z">080186898X</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2001005688</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)48003131</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">New series in NASA history.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n86705686</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=75710</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ProQuest Ebook Central</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL30378415</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH35310976</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - How does one go about organizing something as complicated as a strategic-missile or space-exploration program? To begin to understand this apparent contradiction in terms, we must first understand the exacting nature of space technologies and the concerns of those who create them." Introduction: management and the control of research and development -- Social and technical issues of spaceflight -- Creating concurrency -- From concurrency to systems management -- JPL's journey from missiles to space -- Organizing the manned space program -- Organizing ELDO for failure -- ESRO's American bridge across the management gap -- Coordination and control of high-tech research and development.
