Zusammenfassung: | An examination of women's self-defense culture and its relationship to feminism. I was once a frightened feminist. So begins Martha McCaughey's odyssey into the dynamic world of women's self- defense, a culture which transforms women involved with it and which has equally profound implications for feminist theory and activism. Unprecedented numbers of American women are learning how to knock out, maim, even kill men who assault them. Sales of mace and pepper spray have skyrocketed. Some 14 million women own handguns. From behind the scenes at gun ranges, martial arts dojos, fitness centers offering Cardio Combat, and in padded attacker courses like Model Mugging, Real Knockouts demonstrates how self-defense trains women out of the femininity that makes them easy targets for men's abuse. And yet much feminist thought, like the broader American culture, seems deeply ambivalent about women's embrace of violence, even in self-defense. Investigating the connection between feminist theory and women physically fighting back, McCaughey found self-defense culture to embody, literally, a new brand of feminism. |

Investigating the connection between feminist theory and women physically fighting back, McCaughey found self-defense culture to embody, literally, a new brand of feminism.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Self-defense for women</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Feminist theory.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh90002282</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Women</subfield><subfield code="x">Crimes against</subfield><subfield code="x">Prevention.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Autodéfense féminine</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect social.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Théorie féministe.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">HEALTH & FITNESS</subfield><subfield code="x">Safety.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Feminist theory</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Self-defense for women</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Women</subfield><subfield code="x">Crimes against</subfield><subfield code="x">Prevention</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Real knockouts (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGxpJTPWQ6VH3H68tTqwBX</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">McCaughey, Martha, 1966-</subfield><subfield code="t">Real knockouts.</subfield><subfield code="d">New York : New York University Press, ©1997</subfield><subfield code="z">0814755771</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 97004774</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)36581960</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Book collections on Project MUSE.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=48177</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="936" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">BATCHLOAD</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH38342957</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">De Gruyter</subfield><subfield code="b">DEGR</subfield><subfield code="n">9780814763186</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">48177</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Internet Archive</subfield><subfield code="b">INAR</subfield><subfield code="n">realknockoutsphy0000mcca</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Project MUSE</subfield><subfield code="b">MUSE</subfield><subfield code="n">muse10559</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">7563240</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">2321543</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |
