Zusammenfassung: | In this volume, scholarship on Sappho moves beyond a limiting focus on textual reconstruction or analysis of her possible biography to study her as a powerful and influential voice in the Western cultural tradition. Many of the essays presented here mark a turning point in Sappho scholarship, an efflorescence of literary and contextual criticism in which scholars read Sappho's poetry for its literary content and its relation to literary and mythical tradition. The move to assimilate methodologies from other branches of literary and cultural studies is evident, and feminist scholarship and work on gender theory are represented. The aim of this collection is to draw well-deserved attention to Sappho's importance as a poet and to offer a sense of the lively debate and competing critical positions within Sappho studies. |

The aim of this collection is to draw well-deserved attention to Sappho's importance as a poet and to offer a sense of the lively debate and competing critical positions within Sappho studies.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="0" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Sappho</subfield><subfield code="x">Criticism and interpretation.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Sappho</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Love poetry, Greek</subfield><subfield code="x">History and criticism.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Women and literature</subfield><subfield code="z">Greece.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Poésie d'amour grecque</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire et critique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Femmes et littérature</subfield><subfield code="z">Grèce.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">LITERARY CRITICISM</subfield><subfield code="x">Ancient & Classical.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Love poetry, Greek</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Women and literature</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Greece</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJxd6hw8HtWYq9JY6hjjYP</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Greek & Latin Languages & Literatures.</subfield><subfield code="2">hilcc</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Languages & Literatures.</subfield><subfield code="2">hilcc</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Criticism, interpretation, etc.</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Greene, Ellen,</subfield><subfield code="d">1950-</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCjKm4MPJ8j4wKrQHBDKdFC</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n96025239</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Reading Sappho (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGkvdmFrbkP6rJvWt7qHbq</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="t">Reading Sappho.</subfield><subfield code="d">Berkeley : University of California Press, ©1996</subfield><subfield code="z">0520201957</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 96013702</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)34472857</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Classics and contemporary thought ;</subfield><subfield code="v">2.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n94096533</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=13082</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">3875659</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">2310291</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">13082</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Internet Archive</subfield><subfield code="b">INAR</subfield><subfield code="n">readingsapphocon0000unse</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

In this volume, scholarship on Sappho moves beyond a limiting focus on textual reconstruction or analysis of her possible biography to study her as a powerful and influential voice in the Western cultural tradition.
