Zusammenfassung:Thematic cartography, the geo-scientific discipline of mapping the natural and cultural phenomena of our environment, was one of the major interests of my friend Opart Nimmanop. In thematic mapping he discovered a powerful tool of understanding the physical and social development of his beloved country and her regions. He became interested in the great variety of concepts and methods of thematic mapping to portray the many facets and details of spatial pattern on maps. He was interested in the methodology of cartography of other countries as source of selecting and transferring suitable elements to Thai cartography. He was fascinated by the force of the map key as tool of clear thinking. He was worried about the slowness of the present techniques of map production and looked forward for computer-assisted thematic mapping. He encouraged the dissemination of maps so that they could be used by decision makers and educationists, by scientists and laymen to understand and plan the spatial pattern of society in Thailand. By his fascination of thematic maps, by his interest in new concepts and methods, by his knowledge and competence Opart Nimmanop decisively stimulated, encouraged and directed the development of thematic cartography in Thailand. My interest in thematic mapping of Southeast-Asia was raised in 1970 when Prof. E. Meynen, Prof. H. Uhlig and Dr. K. Horstmann asked me to join ESCAP in Bangkok as an expert in cartography for the project of an Economic and Social Atlas of Asia. At that time I met a young Thai officer of the Royal Thai Survey Department, Captain Bencha Thongdee. He informed me about the project. He also informed me about thematic mapping of Thailand. The first attempt of systematic thematic mapping of Thailand was made by the Royal Thai Survey Department in 1961 with a set of nine topical maps at 1:1,000,000.
