Zusammenfassung: | Tributes are a common thing within the graffiti culture. Since writing travelled from New York to the globe writers all around the world have painted look-a-likes and inspired pieces and so tipped their hat to the founding fathers of the graffiti movement. Most of the time iconic pieces from Martha Cooper’s and Henry Chalfant’s graffiti bible SUBWAY ART (We offer the re-edition from 2009, with a different layout.) have been used as a template to do so. With REPAINTING SUBWAY ART the Dutch trainwriter TRIPL a.k.a. FURIOUS took this idea to a whole new level. With an incomparable love for detail he reinterpreted every single piece which was included in the classic publication from 1984. Ten years after the spark was set for fulfilling the project finally the publication on his insane mission is finished. Accompanying the idea of paying tribute to the writers it only made sense to reinterpret the book as an cult object as well. The 196-paged softcover comes in the same format and haptics as the original SUBWAY ART. Besides repainting all of the pieces and documenting them in the exact same style TRIPL a.k.a. FURIOUS managed also to reenact all the book’s content apart from pieces: the layout, close ups, portrait shots, action photos, and collages. He also tells the story of how the idea came to his mind and evolved further over the years as well as anecdotes on the realization of several tricky actions. Additionally Dr. Edward Birzin and Mikel van den Boogaard did contribute essays to the content. REPAINTING SUBWAY ART is the ultimate tribute to the number one medium for graffiti: the book. Finalizing this insane project and even having Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant involved makes this publication one of the most entertaining titles of the last years. The sheer passion involved in every piece and photo will let you pull it out of your shelf many times, just like the iconic original |
