Zusammenfassung: | The abundance of marble stones in the Walloon subsoil explains the long-standing existence of a significant marble tradition in Belgium. Heritage projects require a detailed approach prior to any restoration intervention focusing on the identification of materials and surface finishes. Iconographic, archival and photographic sources should be consulted alongside a material-based, geological and technical approach to the objects, including an analysis of possible tool marks and evidence of products used, whether chemical or metallic. This data makes it possible to plan an intervention, either to reinforce the material and restore the work to a coherent state, or to replace it if degradation is so advanced that it compromises the legibility of the composition or even the survival of the object if the marble plays a structural role. Choosing a substitute material is no straightforward matter, as it must meet physical and aesthetic criteria; many classic marbles are no longer available on the market. The project of a materials conservatory is being considered, as is the possibility of reactivating abandoned quarries for these heritage needs. |
