"In this outstanding book, the story of the Maasai is told from the perspective of the social insider. A major addition to the wider literature on decolonization." TOYIN FALOLA, AUTHOR OF DECOLONIZING AFRICAN STUDIES (2022) "A thrilling reconceptualization of Maasai history, of Kenyan history, and of the discipline of history itself." BERYL SATTER, RUTGERS UNIVERSITY, USA "Meitamei Olol Dapash and Mary Poole not only decolonize and reconstruct the framing of Maasai history, but in doing so offer the wisdom and insight necessary to move forward into new futures.” TODD MILLER, AUTHOR OF BUILD BRIDGES, NOT WALLS (2021) “This book offers compelling evidence of the Maasai s strength, selfportrayal, and quest for cultural independence in an increasingly globalized society." JAMES P. TAKONA, COPPIN STATE UNIVERSITY, USA This book represents a radical new approach to writing history of an Indigenous East African community, which centres the community's own historical knowledge and cultural common sense. It describes the impact that a colonized version of history has had on the occupation of Maasailand, and equally the power of a decolonized history to ignite movements for land justice. Shifting the perspective to a Maasai line of sight leads to a cascade of challenge of broader tropes of African history. Through this rich and detailed narrative, we learn an untold history of the violence of colonial occupation, the "myth" of Kenyan independence, and the hyper-colonization of Maasailand through the neocolonial era of African nation-states. It demonstrates that Maasai pastoralism,
which recognizes the rights of nature and wildlife communities, obstructs capitalist exploitation of land and resources, which forms the core of the conflict over Maasai identity today and the right to self-representation. MEITAMEI OLOL DAPASH, PhD, is an internationally recognized Maasai leader, founder of the Institute for Maasai Education, Research Conservation (MERC), and Director with Mary Poole of the Dopoi Centre for community organizing and education, in Narok, Kenya. MARY POOLE, PhD, Co-Director of MERC, is a historian of U.S. race, gender and social policy, and East Africa history, on the faculty of Prescott College, USA.
