Zusammenfassung:This two-part article provides an overview of the work of one of the most important creators of religious art in Latin America in the second half of the twentieth century, the Austro-Peruvian painter Adolfo Winternitz (1906-1993). His stained glass windows were made by the famous Chiara workshop in Lausanne, in Switzerland (which operated between 1880 and 1994). The fruit of this intercontinental exchange, a body of work consisting mainly of dalles de verre, is preserved in churches and public and private buildings in Europe and America. This first study, aimed at situating this artist in the history of stained glass, is transcontinental in scope and is one of the first to look at the production of Swiss artists and master glaziers exported to Latin America. This first part presents biographical details about the artist, his vision of art and the context of his creations. The second part will offer a brief analysis of nine of his works
