Zusammenfassung:During the 1890s, Julius Böhler significantly expanded his business. One figure in his growing international network was the Belgian art collector Fritz Mayer van den Bergh. The collector bought a few artworks from Böhler, but he also sold various objects to the dealer. Mayer van den Bergh’s archive, which is today kept in the museum named after the collector, allows to reconstruct the contacts and transactions between the two contemporaries. The archive therefore makes it possible to examine the practices and strategies that helped Böhler to build a leading international company around 1900. In addition, the case study offers insights into the complex relationships between collectors and dealers as well as the diverse positions that these actors took on the international art market.
