Zusammenfassung:The case study examines the relationship between the two art dealers Julius Böhler in Munich and Max Stern in Düsseldorf who was persecuted as Jewish and was forced to liquidate his renowned business in 1937. Fortunately, two research projects were conducted congruently at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte, and it was very fruitful to combine sources and expert knowledge generated in both projects. Seven transactions could be verified, six of them were acquisitions of Old Masters which Max Stern bought from Julius Böhler in the critical years 1935 and 1936. In 2020, one of these, a painting by Brueghel, was purchased by the National Gallery of Art in Washington after the Stern Cooperation Project (SCP) had reconstructed the provenance and a settlement with the heirs to Max Stern had been reached.
