Zusammenfassung:"This book offers an inclusive lens through which to study the music, dance, and allied arts of South Asia, its diasporas, and the people who produce and use these as cultural expressions. Based largely on the perspectives of ethnomusicologists, who study cultural meaning as constructed in sound and movement, most of these studies draw from years of ethnographic fieldwork, language study, and hands-on music and dance training. The authors in this collection understand music and dance as everyday lived experience. By "everyday South Asia," we mean the practices of South Asians living in a multitude of countries and regions, whose identities include numerous castes, classes, tribes, genders, sexualities, language groups, religions, nationalities, and other overlapping affiliations. In taking an inclusive and expansive approach, this collection aims to present an accurate picture of the many arts practiced, experienced, and appreciated by the broadly diverse people of the subcontinent and its diasporas. Through these chapters, we show how the arts are a meaningful expression of human relationships and interactions among ordinary people as well as by virtuosic performers for elite patrons. The realities, experiences, and artistic practices of the everyday person, however, have not typically been accessible to most students of South Asian music in university settings. Our intent in curating this collection is to make these diverse perspectives more readily available to teachers and students of the arts and cultures of South Asia and the world"--
