Zusammenfassung: | "The Great Irish Famine produced Europe's worst refugee crisis of the nineteenth century. More than 1.5 million people left Ireland, with many ending up in Canada. At the eye of the storm were nearly 1,700 children who lost one or both of their parents during the voyage and were now in an unfamiliar place and destitute. Through the agency of churches, some government support, and makeshift civic relief initiatives, these children were gathered, fed, schooled, and then placed in homes-Saint John, Quebec, Montreal, Bytown (Ottawa), Kingston, and Toronto. This book seeks to find out what happened to these children and, in particular, what role the churches and the state played in this early Canadian incidence of refugee resettlement. A key discovery is that these children were not legally adopted, and were regarded by their hosts as little more than adults-in-the-making, often serving as cheap labour in homes, on farms, and in businesses. The famine orphans' episode also challenges longstanding assumptions about sectarian relations in Canada; there was considerable ecumenical co-operation in the care for these newcomers and the Catholic and Protestant churches stepped forward as primary providers of social services. The Famine moment was an important one for the Roman Catholic Church as it engaged its energies from fundraising to front line care. Finally, the study explores how the Irish famine experience has been used to support national myths for the sake of Canadian unity."-- |
