According to US sources, the Russian Aerospace Forces had forward-deployed one of its S-400 SAM sites right up to the border with Ukraine, and then opened fire. After travelling over some 120 kilometres, the Russian SAM hit the Su-27P Bort 100, piloted by Colonel Aleksander Oksanchenko, one of the most famous Ukrainian aerobatic pilots and deputy commander of the 831st Brigade. Oksanchenko, who had been decorated for his actions against the separatists and Russians in 2014, was killed.
