Zusammenfassung: | "This is the story of the Seljuk Turks of Anatolia, or Asia Minor, who in the eleventh century created the Sultanate of Rum, which lasted until the beginning of the fourteenth century. The Seljuk period - when Anatolia, which had been for the most part Greek and Christian and became predominantly Turkish and Muslim - was one of the great cultural transformations in Middle Eastern history. Storm on Horseback, the first book to cover the entire period of the Anatolian Seljuks, includes a dramatic narrative history of the Seljuks and their successors, describing their internal affairs and their wars with the Byzantine Greeks, Venetians, Crusaders, Mongols and Mamluks. It is also, uniquely, a traveller's guide to the extraordinary heritage of the Seljuks in Turkey. In a continuous series of itineraries, John Freely takes the reader from Istanbul throughout central and eastern Anatolia, describing the surpassingly beautiful palaces, fortresses, mosques, medreses and mausoleums, bridges and caravanserais with which the Seljuk sultans and beylik emirs adorned their cities. Freely also illuminates the mystical music and dance of the Mevlevi dervishes, the lyrical poetry of Mevlana and Yunus Emre, the songs of the wandering minstrels known as asiklar and the witty stories of Nasretting Hoja. Though the Seljuks themselves were absorbed and vanished into the broad mix of Anatolian peoples, their cultural heritage lives on in the deepest roots of Turkish life, just as their magnificent monuments still adorn the landscape of Turkey"--Provided by publisher |
