Summaries Ladislav Kudrna Human Rights Day, 10 December 1987 and the first political demonstration since August 1969 The first political demonstration since August 1969 took place on Human Rights Day, 10 December 1987. Although it is still overshadowed by the more famous demonstration of 21 August 1988, the fact remains that it was a powerful impetus for the dissident movement, not excluding the underground, and one of the key factors in getting out of the ghetto and bringing dis content to the streets. If the communist regime feared anything, it was the breaking of the stagnant waters of “normalization” process and the mass protests of the population. The regime of “normalization” process held on to power through immobility and maintaining the status quo. Petr Placák “České děti” and Charta 77 In his article, the author contrasts the attitudes and opinions of the youngest generation of dissidents associated with the České děti (The Czech Children) movement with those of the Charta 77 (Charter 77) dissidents, who were a generation older. The České děti declared their programme to be the restoration of the Czech kingdom - they ridiculed the regime, official culture and the 184
regime’s interpretation of history, and considered the possible dialogue with the authorities in opposition to the Charta 77 to be politically naive. In reality, however, according to the author, who was active in České děti movement, the Charta 77 fulfilled its mission as a human rights movement that was open to differ ent sides and based on non-judgmental dialogue. The Charta 77 regarded the “anarcho-monarchist” České děti as a legitimate part of the Czechoslovak opposition to the communist regime. Charta 77 was not naive, but was highly politically clever. František Stárek Čuňas Vokno - institution In the second half of the 1980s the editors of Vokno magazine tried to expand their activities, especially in the field of “new media”. But also lectures and exhibitions became an integral part of the Vokno operation. While festivals and concerts were ongoing throughout Vokno’s existence, they were so closely in tertwined with the magazine’s editorial office in the second half of the 1980s that one could speak of the magazine’s key role in their very establishment. The tradition of the rock festival in Trutnov, which still exists, was started in this way. Martin Valenta Study. It will get worse. The polemic on Jan Pelc’s novel from the years 1984-1989 Study. It will get worse. The polemic on Jan Pelc’s novel from the years 1984-1989 provides an overview of the long discussion 185
in Czechoslovak dissent about this book. It was first printed in the exile magazine Svědectví (1984). The polemic provoked a dis pute between the wings of Charter 77. Specifically, between the underground subculture on the one hand and representatives of the reform communists and some Catholics on the other. Using the raw history of the beatniks from the industrial north of Bohemia in the second half of the 1970s, she outlined the incompatibility of values between the underground and the more culturally traditional parts of Charter 77. As a result, the discussion disrupted some essential relationships both in Czech oslovak dissent and in exile. It led to demands by underground representatives for greater representation in the relevant struc tures of Charter 77. At the same time, the book showed that the contradictory relationship to modern technocratic society crossed the Iron Curtain. The book has often been compared to the West Berlin underground bestseller Wir Kinder vom Bahn hof Zoo (1978). Barbara Bothová Photography as a source for underground research? The Industrial Revolution in the 19th century brought with it not only technological advances but also several social changes. Photography became one of the symbols of this period, docu menting these turbulent transformations and, over time, becom ing part of the everyday life of large sections of the population. Photography, as a specific imprint of the past, gradually became part of historical science as well. The present study provides a brief overview of what photography is, how it can be worked with as an
archival source, what new insights it can bring to 186
underground research, and whether it can serve as a relevant source in this regard. Miroslav Vodrážka Why the revolutionary youth movement could not reach out to the underground Some leftist intellectuals and scholars, in their exploration of the normalization past, ask why the Marxist Revolutionary Youth Movement and Petr Uhl failed to reach out to the counterculture of the Czechoslovak underground. The study not only points out that identifying the counterculture and the New Left or attempt ing to historically associate the Revolutionary Youth Movement with the underground is a misunderstanding of deep cultural, generational differences and historical contexts, but also analyzes the fundamental differences between the two. The text is based on the author’s publication Cataclysm, published by the Center for the Documentation of Totalitarian Regimes in 2022. Zdeněk R. Nešpor Underground and alternative sociology (unsurprising passing In the second half of the 1980s, a number of currents began to form in Czechoslovakia that were not explicitly oppositional, but distanced themselves from the ruling regime and sought alterna tives to it. One of them was the so-called alternative sociology, operating in a “grey zone” outside or on the margins of standard 187
academie organisations, which at the same time emphasised the sociology of culture in its programme. The author examines to what extent this orientation led to the interest of the most impor tant samizdat sociological periodical, the journal Sociologický obzor (1987-1989), in the Czech (music) underground of the period. It shows rather a mutual misunderstanding and miscom munication, while the sociological grasp of the underground only came a decade later, under changed social conditions and especially in the specific situation in which Josef Alan found himself within Czech sociology at that time. Jan Blüml Reception of Metal in Czechoslovakia in the Second Half of the 1980s with a Focus on the Attitudes of Official Music Critics This paper examines the reception of metal in Czechoslovakia in the second half of the 1980s, focusing on the attitudes of official music critics. It shows that the negative reception that metal received in the pages of the official music press in the period in question was not primarily politically motivated (based on the traditional criticism of long hair, etc.), but stemmed from an artistic ideology that had been taking shape in Czech popular music discourse (as it had abroad) since the 1960s, and which overestimated the importance of song lyrics and their authentic reflection of current social reality. 188
Petra Veselá “New thinking” and “negative phenomena“ Marxist-Leninist education in the period 1987-1988 In the early 1980s, the ideal of middle-class consumerism came to the fore. Television series function as a method of transmitting ideology. Rituals of the body, Spartakiade and sport in general point to how “power” penetrates the body (Foucault). Material ism is also a result of Marx’s ideology, which brings into society the “unmasking” of all those human dimensions that Marx be lieved would interfere with man’s creative working potential. The result is the simulacrum, the total removal of human semantics where ideology is an empty form. The numerous activities of the underground of the time led to the filling of the void. The division of the DG 307 group is paradigmatic. Typical of this period is the search for the “lost dimension of being”, then the struggle for public space and the reconstruction of identity. It is no longer a “liminal extreme underground”, but ambivalence is characteristic. This is due to the fact that the members of the underground became an important part of dissent, but at the same time they were also an element of power. The boundary they were operating on was as fragile as the ambivalence given by the context: whereas in a democratic society the dynamics of resistance appeal to the objectivity of the state and demand an answer, here it was clear from the outset that no dialogue was possible. The relationship to the state is absolutely crucial because it creates unconditional dependence on the one hand and hopelessness and despair on the other.
This ambivalent relationship is set up as a “double relation” (Bateson), that is, a contradictory, unresolvable situ ation. This tells us something significant about what people in 189
the underground were experiencing during this period and what impact this situation had on their psyche, especially when it is clear that emotions arise as a result of attitudes and relationships in society, i.e. as a cultural product. 190 |
