Preface to the third edition „Behold, here is the Hungarian Pompeii!” These are the words of Arch duke Franz Karl of Austria (father of emperor Franz Joseph), who was first„celebrity” to draw attention to the remains of the Aquin cum Civil Town only at the very beginning of the excavations in the first decades of the 19th century. Ever since, the area of the town has been in the focus of interest of researchers and the subject of constant archaeological research revealing the largest, continuously excavated Roman town north of the Alps. The area of the „excava tions” or later the „ruin garden” soon became a popular weekend destination for the locals as well as tourists and even artists (poets, painters, writers) were inspired by the Roman remains. The growing popularity of the romantic park also required some written guides since visitors were interested in finding out the history and func tion of the so far excavated buildings. Hence, the very first guide was written by pioneer archaeolgist and first director of the later established Aquincum Museum, Bálint Kuzsinszky in 1892. The guide book was rewritten and reprinted several times while it’s most elaborated version was published in 1934. Excavating the remains of the Roman town continued even during WW2 and afterwards with even more and more visitors coming. The museum’s permanent exhibition was reopened in 1948 and soon the park was surround ed by a fence and started to operate as a proper open air museum. This process was also accompanied by several smaller guide books on Aquincum containing the latest results.
Further excavations de termined the exact extension of the settlement, its suburban zone as well as clarified the topographical framework of the whole set tlement complex of Aquincum including the legionary fortress and the military town to the south. This huge work was completed with the large-scale restauration project of the so far excavated ruins of the Civil Town between 1968 and 1973. The current view of the archaeological park is mainly reflecting this huge work. The next thorough guide book on the Civil Town was written by the leader of the excavations of that time, Klára Póczy in 1971 accompanied by a publication on the stone monuments exhibited in the lapidarium surrounding the museum building by Margit Németh in the same year. Even though, emphasis was very much shifted to the legion ary fortress and the surrounding military town in the next decades due to the accelerated construction activity in Óbuda, small scale excavations and renovations continued in the archaeological park with a new permanent and temporary exhibitions organized in the museum and a whole area became increasingly a didactic archaeo logical site. The next milestone was marked by the 100th anniversary 7
of the opening of the museum in 1994 with a brand new exhibition and guide book („Gods, soliders, citizens in Aquincum” - edited by Paula Zsidi) while the latest more complex guide that also include descriptions of the private and public buildings of the town date to 2005 also by Paula Zsidi. This current guide book is more of a reprint of the former publica tion although we tried to be as up-to-date as possible: new research (and excavation) results are included and the list of publications has also been refreshed. Our main intention is to give fresh informations on the Civil Town of Aquincum to our visitors keeping in mind and at the same time also demonstrating it - that research can never be finished here: more and more information emerge from the ex cavations that help us to better understand the everyday life of the once glorious Civil Town, the colonia splendidissima.
