It contains one hundred poems, none of which was written by Nick Thurston himself. He ordered them all from underpaid ghostwriters through the Amazon offshoot Mechanical Turk. As we learn from Darren Wershler’s afterword, which is the only "real," nonautomated text in this book, even the foreword ascribed to the media theorist McKenzie Wark was supplied by a ghostwriter from Lahore, commissioned through freelancer.com for $75. In 2016, the Dutch translation Van de Onderaannemingsovereenkomst, Of Beginselen van Poëtische Recht was published, which Thurston again completely outsourced. This time, however, he entrusted it exclusively to machines: the translation was done by Google Translate, the text was poured automatically into the stylesheet of the English first edition, and the print-on-demand supplier Lulu was responsible for manufacturing the book. The translation is therefore riddled with countless mistakes, starting with the title, which disregards the established Dutch translation of Rousseau’s On the Social Contract, on which Thurston is playing. ... |
