| Zusammenfassung: | À travers un examen des dommages causés à l’environnement et aux populations par la production de pâte à papier destinée à Eastman Kodak, cette étude répertorie certaines externalités négatives suscitées par l’industrie de la photographie. Cette notion désigne les coûts occasionnés (comme la pollution) par la production ou la consommation de biens dont le prix de vente ne tient pas compte. Ce sont des coûts que les producteurs et les consommateurs ne voient pas ou refusent de voir. Comme le suggère cette étude, la prise en compte des externalités négatives engendrées par l’industrie photographique interroge sur la manière dont nous attribuons une valeur à la photographie, mais incite aussi à se demander qui fait les frais de la prospérité de ce moyen d’expression. Through an examination of environmental and community harms resulting from the production of paper pulp for the Eastman Kodak Company, this article traces some of the negative externalities arising from the photography industry. Negative externalities refer to costs resulting from the production or consumption of goods (e.g. pollution) that are not accounted for in the price of those goods. Understood in visual terms, negative externalities are costs that producers and buyers do not, or refuse, to see. As this article proposes, the process of accounting for negative externalities related to the photography industry not only raises questions about how we assign values to photography but also about who bears the costs of the flourishing of the medium. |
