Zusammenfassung:This chapter focuses on the Beaton Portraits: 1928–1968 exhibition held at the National Portrait Gallery (NPG), London, 1968–1969. The exhibition represents a major case in the history of photography and fashion photography exhibitions, but little has been written on its exhibition makers and their role in transforming this case into one of the most popular commercial and inter-disciplinary exhibitions of the twentieth century. This chapter reconstructs the exhibition focusing on its scenography and the image and object choices made by Cecil Beaton, the scenographer Richard Buckle, and Roy Strong, director of the NPG (1967–1974) and curator of the exhibition. Using the NPG archives, including administrative documentation, exhibition leaflets, exhibition display plans, letters from visitors, and press articles, this chapter will highlight the heterogeneity and avant-garde nature of the exhibition that entwined both visual and material popular culture. Not only did it promote a new material approach to the presentation of two-dimensional photography, but it also explored disciplinary exchanges between theatre, cinema, design, and fashion and various methodologies in the staging of fashion photography. It flirted with the commercial world while engaging its audiences via ephemera, gadgets, perfume, and music.
