Why keep ajournai? To stop time. To make a point about the pointlessness ofit all. To bave company. To be remembered. For there is so much to be recalled, with no one to do tbe recalling. This latest installment of Ned Rorem’s diary opens in 1986, when the author is sixty-two, and closes in 1999. Though Rorem remains as energetic as ever dur ing these years—new music is composed, new books are written—the tone of this volume is autumnal: his life and his world are winding down. He mourns youth’s promiscuousness, robust health, the taste and standards that once defined his artistic circle, dear friends and family now gone. In the most mov ing entries, he describes in compassionate but unsentimental detail the decline and death of his longtime companion, Jim Holmes. Like its famous predecessors, Lies features all the elements readers have come to expect: erotic fantasies, gratuitous slights, aphorisms, indiscretions, program notes, peeves, puns, punditry, and, quite frequently, beauty. Time magazine has called him “the world’s best composer of art songs,” and Joyce Carol Oates has said that “his prose is as fresh and unfailingly interesting as his music.” His five volumes of diaries, together with his memoir, are a unique contribution to the art of autobiography and to America’s cultural and social history, his collections of essays on music have won him three ASCAP-Deems Taylor Awards. The current president of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Ned Rorem divides his time between Manhattan and Nantucket. |
