Rising oil prices, staggering inflation, and a fiercely protected OPEC monopoly provided the spark that propelled oil to the heart of U.S. and international affairs. As Richard Nixon fought off Watergate in 1973. the world suffered a crippling oil shortage initiated by Arab nations in retaliation for American support of Israel. The price of oil skyrocketed, causing serious inflation in the West. One man the U.S. could rely on was the Shah of Iran. In return for arms. Iran sold the U.S. oil. In 1976. with the U.S. economy in peril and an election to fight. President Gerald Ford decided he had to find a country willing to break the OPEC monopoly, something the Shah refused to do. Against the advice of Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Ford made a deal to sell advanced weaponry to the Saudis in exchange for much reduced oil prices. Ford lost the election, the Shah's economy was destabilized, and disaffected elements in Iran mobilized to overthrow him. The outcome was the Iranian Revolution, which dramatically altered the political map of the Middle East. Drawing on newly declassified documents and interviews with key figures. Andrew Scott Cooper offers a fascinating insight into the way the major players attempted to manipulate events in the Middle East, and the lasting consequences for America.
