ASIA@WAR VOLUME 50 In their second report about the Soviet-Afghan War Helsinki Watch provided the following words of the Afghan refugee: They announced it by loudspeaker when the troops came. I heard this from the Russian soldiers, ‘We don’t need the people, we want the land.’4 These were the Soviet State’s policies, like selling weapons. Soviet leaders in Moscow and the Soviet Command in Kabul regarded those Afghan citizens, who did not wish to obey them (that means, almost the whole population of the country) as their enemies, and acted accordingly, in the same way as they acted during the Russian Civil War towards the population of their own country, and during many other wars. And last, but not the least, that the Vietnam War caused a split in American society is another well-known fact. University students demonstrated and protested against the war, other young men refused to join the army. The American media called the officers and soldiers a variety of names and described massacres perpetrated by them. American public figures showed solidarity with the people of Vietnam, and some politicians even called the President of the United States a ‘madman.’ There is the real story. Maybe there was nothing good about it, but it actually happened. Was there a split in Soviet society because of the Soviet-Afghan War? No! Were there any demonstrations, rallies, marches or at least any public statements? Everyone knows that there was not anything of the kind. But what happened in the Soviet Union in connection with the Soviet-Afghan War? Nothing - nothing at all. There was
silence in Soviet society, a silence like the silence of the tomb. One person even said about it that there was no society in the Soviet Union. And it turns out that the American civil society has split into two parts, and was at war with itself, but there was no civil society in the USSR. According to some reports, most of the Soviet people did not know that there was a war in Afghanistan until 1985, and even when they became aware of it, Soviet mothers, receiving bodies of their dead sons, did not demonstrate against the government and did not sign letters of protest. America was divided, but the Soviet Union collapsed and dissolved. Many researchers think that the war in Afghanistan was one of the main causes of the dissolution of the Soviet Union. This statement seems to be true, but with one caveat - not so much the war itself, but rather its cost. Soviet leaders were bankrupt with that war, as they were bankrupt with the arms race. The final irony is that the Soviet Union went bankrupt selling weapons. Have the people who ruled the Soviet Union, learned any lessons from the Soviet-Afghan War? It seems they have not. They did not even acknowledge that there was a war in Afghanistan - soldiers and officers were told about ‘international duty,’ and the paper said that the army planted trees in the streets of Kabul. Maybe those who rule the Russian Federation now have learned anything? Judging by what they are doing, they understand even less; see the story with the Chechen War. And a lot of them have obviously stated that they wish to recreate that very Soviet Union,
having absolutely no idea what kind of country it was, that its collapse and dissolution were only natural and that the Soviet-Afghan War, which was launched by their former bosses, played a major, if not the greatest, role in it. Igor Bunich wrote, Really, Soviet troops, for a reason that even today nobody is able to explain, invaded the neighbouring Muslim country, rampaged there for 10 years, killing one-third of the population and razing roughly a half of the settlements to the ground, were finally knocked out of there by an unconquerable spirit of popular resistance, and, having left this place, decided that the war was now over.5 BIBLIOGRAPHY Alexievich, Svetlana, Cinkovye mal’chiki [Boys in Zinc] (Moscow: Molodaya Gvardiya, 1989) Avtorkhanov, Abdurakhman et al., Vojna v Afganistane [The War in Afghanistan] (Frankfurt/Main: Possev-Verlag, 1981) Balenko, Sergei, Afganistan.
