10. Bergson’s Conception of Comical Imagination anď Laughter The goal of the study is to present the qualities of Henri Bergsons conception of the comic. This conception proves to be extraordinarily flexible and extraordinarily coherent as well. In other words, we regard Bergson’s conception as very successful interpretation of the comic. Comprehensiveness and flexibility of Bergsons conception is proved already by the way of resolving the problem of definition of the comic. Bergson points it is impossible to define the comic once and forever, it is impossible to define the comic by the use “necessary and sufficient conditions”. In reality, the comic is still growing. Offering still new comical images, comical imagination works on the base of the “deep cause” of the comic. We can find this deep cause of the comic in the mechanicity and automatism of human character. Ihe first chapter of the study is devoted to these problems. The second chapter follows the proliferation of the comical imagination into the different spheres: sphere of the comic of gestures and movements, sphere ofthe comic ofsituations and sphere ofthe deep cause ofthe comic, the comic of character. Bergson supposes that other comic manifestations, other comical images, proliferate from this deep cause. We also point to directions of the development of comic, i.e. to directions of the creation of the comical images. On the one hand, this development goes from the deep to the surface, it goes from the deep cause to its superficial manifestations, on the other hand, comical imagination always focuses on the
deep cause in the superficial manifestations, it grasp comic of the character as the cause of the comic of movements, situations and language. In the connection with it, we notice “hypnotic impact” of the automatic movements of comic behaviour, comic acting and speaking. So, we notice that superficial manifestations “suggest” the deep cause of the comic. The third chapter is devoted to Bergsons concept of the function oflaughter. The laughter presents “defence reaction” which is used by society to repress starting isolation of its parts. On the one hand laughter reacts to centrifugal tendencies of individuals, on the other it reacts to movements in society, which enable such centrifugal tendencies of individuals. The laughter acts as a “remedy” in the organism of the society, it represses the “poison” of the mechanicity and automatism of the human character. Laughter works as healing power in society. It prevents developing the tendencies, which would potentially menace 86
social integrity. Causing joy and relief laughter spreads easily, it is omnipresent tool of the maintenance of the harmonious life of society. The appendix of the study stresses the bergsonism of Louis Cazamian’s conception of humour. Cazamian widely develops Henri Bergson’s concise remarks, which show humour as a special sort of comical transposition of language. Distinctive features of humour are carefully and extensively recorded by Cazamian. He shows especially, that humour is based on transposition, which is inevitably conscious, that the way of this transposition is elected by the author of humour. Cazamian is also concerned with division of humour into four different species according to the ways of the movement of transposition. Cazamian particularly focuses on complexity of humour and its power of impact. Even if certain view of the world and life, i.e. certain “matter” ofhumour, is obviously suggested by the mechanism of transposition, i.e. by “form” of humour, it is impossible to determine any universal rule describing relation between matter and form. In that sense Cazamian emphasizes indefinability of humour, the fact that suggested matter ofhumour is absolutely individual and springs from the concrete personality of the author. Cazamian also emphasizes indeterminability of the effectiveness of the humour on the spectator, listener or reader. These statements show the essential influence of many important motifs of Bergson’s aesthetics and philosophy on Cazamian’s conception of humour. So even though Cazamian explicitly refers only to several Bergson’s
thoughts, Cazamian original conception of humour proves to be integrally bergsonian. 87
