Zusammenfassung:"A new edition -- with new preface, bibliography and notes -- of Boccaccio's encyclopedia of historical biography dealing with the fortunes and calamities of famous people, both mythical and actual, from Adam to Francesco Petrarch"--
Beschreibung:"For this translation of The Downfall of the Famous the Paris edition of Jean Gourmont and Jean Petit (1520) has been utilized, because it is a good representation of Boccaccio's first edition and because it is now generally available in a facsimile edition. In a few places the Gourmont-Petit edition has been corrected on the basis of its apparent source, Manuscript Latin 6069M of the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris. About half of the original tales and links have been selected for The Downfall of the Famous, based on their representative character as well as for their importance to the history of European literature and of ideas" -- Introduction by Louis Brewer Hall, updated 2018
