Summary From idea to exhibition and publication The National Museum of Contemporary History, together with the national highways managing company - DARS d.d., is marking the 50th anniversary of the first highway section in Slovenia and Yugoslavia, with an exhibition and publication - “Slovenika, you're truly beautiful!". The highway was opened to traffic on December 29, 1972 and marked the beginning of the long-awaited development of the road network in Slovenia. Overall socio-economic development was accompanied by development in the sphere of motoring, which quickly pointed out deficiencies in the road infrastructure which was additionally put under stress by the development of tourism. Traffic increased sharply and roads became "bottlenecks", so the construction of a highway network was necessary. In 1969, the SRS Road Fund issued a fundamental document entitled Road Network and Expressways in SR Slovenia: Development Plan, which stated that "for the first time since the construction of the Southern Railway, the construction of a communication system is being prepared, which will undoubtedly be equally important as the railway in the past". At the ceremony marking the start of construction works, the president of the SRS Road Fund said: "The main directions and goals of social and economic development and the geographical location of Yugoslavia give transport special importance. Welldeveloped transport is a prerequisite for the development of all branches of the economy, for investments, production and consumption. The development of a traffic network is therefore
closely related to general social and economic development." The importance of the construction of the first highway is not only evidenced by the fact that it was one of the largest investments of all time in our country, which could only be compared with the construction of the Southern Railway 165 years earlier or the construction of the series of power plants in the Drava valley, but also because it had a massive impact on the Slovene landscape. The construction of the first highway in Slovenia thus represented a major turning point in many areas. Its 274 "Slovenika, zares si čudovita!” complexity was revealed during research for the museums project regarding the 50th anniversary of the first highway in Slovenia. The National Museum of Contemporary History is one of the national museums that covers the history and national heritage of the entire 20th century, extending to the present day. Its basic mission is to acquire, record, store, research and present the national cultural heritage to the general public. The museum acquires material in various ways, one of them being the donation of items. The donation of a uniform of one of the first toll collectors to the Museum in 2019 led to the idea for this exhibition. This year is the 50th anniversary of the first highway in Slovenia and so an ideal time for the exhibition. At first, a small exhibition of photographs from the extremely rich museums photo archive, which contains approximately 3 million different photographs, was planned. The photographs would be complemented by donated uniforms of the first toll collectors.
During the review of the photos and in-depth research, it quickly became clear that the first highway, which involved many other activities, deserved much more attention. Many experts from various fields had been involved in its design and construction, and they had made contacts with professional services in the wider international space. Last but not least, it was Slovene experts who were the first in Europe to introduce some innovations in the construction system and in the field of traffic signaling. In addition, the highway also introduced new professions, which, just like the design and construction of the road, presented unique challenges. The emphasis of the exhibition was on the photographs of the construction of the highway, up to its official opening. The uniforms of the toll collectors were complemented by documents and new material. The exhibition was accompanied by texts of the historical background, general technical data of the construction and other interesting points,
Summary although the greatest added value came from the personal stories of witnesses. Realizing that the exhibition would only be on view for a certain period of time, the idea of a publication arose, because the beauty of the written word is that it remains forever. The publication "Slovenika, you’re truly beautiful!" was created with the help and cooperation of many individuals and institutions, and its release was made possible with the financial support of DARS. It is divided into three parts, which complement each other. In the first part, in addition to introductory texts by the president of the DARS management board and the director of the National Museum of Contemporary History, there are various sections with specific content: presentation of the museum project; development of DARS d.d. and a general overview of the construction of the road system; the historical background at the time of planning and construction of the highway; a historical overview of the development of roads after World War II, with an emphasis on the construction of the first highway and the technical specifications of its construction; the role of the Karst Research Institute in road construction and the stories of witnesses, which reflect their perspective and represent a unique historical source. In the second, most comprehensive part, the focus is on the photographic material of various Slovene photojournalists and photographers, showing the construction of the highway between 1 970 and 1972, while in the third part, various documents and museum exhibits are presented, particularities and
specific technical data related to the construction are highlighted. oral testimonies that we obtained during the project, we were unanimous at the Museum that a new collection should be established, which will further upgrade the existing ones. We are also aware that many more individuals and institutions deserve their place in this publication, so we cordially invite anyone who owns objects, photos, documents etc. related to construction, transport and infrastructure, or who have perhaps themselves been involved in any of these fields and would like to share their experience with us, to please contact us and contribute to our collection for all future generations. Finally, I would like to point out that the entire project “Slovenika, you're truly beautiful!" is a fine example of cooperation between economy and culture, each of which significantly contributed to the project. I am sure that our pleasant cooperation will continue in the future. In the publication we wanted to show the complexity of the highway construction project. Its content offers the basis for in-depth research, not only related to the construction of the first section, but also the construction of the entire highway system.
