344 Summary The Dula family ZDENKO ĎURIŠKA The lineage of Matúš Dula, politician and lawyer, was anything but typical or ordinary. His ancestors came from Turiec, an ethnographically unique village of Blatnica. Like other natives of the region, the villagers used the knowledge of the healing effects of plants and herbs brought to this region by the Jesuits, and in the latter half of the 18th century they produced herb oils and ointments, which they offered for sale through out Europe and especially to Russia. They professed the Evangelical reli gion. We have found the oldest mention of the Dula ancestry in the urban censuses of 1715 and 1720. Other archival sources from the 18th century refer to several members of the family, but we have not always been able to establish their mutual genealogical relationships. In the research, we mainly focused on the main branch of the family, whose founder was Matúš Dula born around 1720 and which continued through his namesakes (approx. 1740 - 1813), (? - 1837), (1799 - ?) and (1818 - 1901) up to the politician and lawyer Matúš Dula (1846 -1926). As these herb alists, saffron growers and later pedlars often died on their way to for eign lands, we were not always able to find documents to detail their lives. However, what can be claimed with certainty is that, in addition to the material gain, they returned from their travels with new knowl edge and outlook, which shaped their worldview. Matúš Dula (1818 1901) decided to invest the earned resources in agricultural property in his native village, a move that, following the tightening
of door-to-door trade regulations in Russia, represented greater security. He was also in volved in the local self-government, serving as mayor and participating in national events and church activities. In 1838, through his marriage to Anna Duchajová, he became related to another family line in Blatnica, whose members showed active interest in herbalism, saffron growing and door-to-door trade to a much greater extent than the Dula family. In the latter half of the 19th century, they founded prosperous brick-and-
Summary 345 mortar stores in distant parts of Russia, especially in remote Siberia. This was the environment that also produced politician and lawyer Matúš Dula. He settled in Martin and consolidated his social status by marriage with Vilma Pauliny-Tóth, the eldest daughter of the writer, politician and public figure Viliam Pauliny-Tóth. Gradually, Dula became one of the most prominent representatives of the national movement. Unfor tunately, his family life was marred with tragedies; his two daughters died in childhood and his son Viliam Matúš on the threshold of adult hood due to blood poisoning allegedly caused by a fly bite. His death was a great blow to his parents, and his mother soon died of cancer. His father was succeeded by his son Igor (1878 -1951), a medical doctor and public official, who served as regional vice president. We also briefly touch on other branches of the Dula family, especially the one that suc cessfully ran a business in Samarkand until the advent of communism in Russia. Matúš Dula in the context of the politics of the Kingdom of Hungary IVAN MRVA Matúš Dula was one of the most influential political figures of the last two decades of the 19th and the first two decades of the 20th cen tury. He was a man of action, fearless but vigilant, a selfless nationalist, a member and later vice-chairman of the Slovak National Party and, in 1914-1921, its chairman. He stood at the birth of the Declaration of the Slovak Nation; in the difficult period following the disintegration of the Kingdom of Hungary, he steered the Slovak National Council and con
trolled the fate of the Slovaks. He served as a deputy, later as a senator of the National Assembly, chairman of the Slovak Club, co-founder and honorary chairman of the Slovak National and Peasant Party. During the existence of the Kingdom of Hungary, despite his repeated attempts, he had never been a member of the Hungarian Diet. For years, he played an important part in regional politics as a member of the county com mittee of the Turiec administration and a prominent secular figure of the Turiec Administration District within the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession. He also represented Slovak Eangelicals at district assemblies, where he consistently strove to avert the Hungariansation of the Evangelical church life. No less significant was his activity in the
346 Summary economic and cultural spheres. He was a long-standing vice-chairman of Turčiansko-svätomartinská sporiteľňa, a member of the managing bo dies of the Tatra Bank and several other companies, in which the Slovak and Czech investment capital played a decisive role. In addition to the economic sphere, he was also involved in cultural and organizational work, he was a co-founder and administrator of the Book Publishers As sociation. Dula's other great merit was in the construction of the Natio nal House in Martin. As an experienced lawyer, he took on the defence of accused Slovaks in the mid-1880s. Yet, the main focus of his public political activity from the 1870s onwards was the Slovak National Party. He was active in politics for long 57 years, half a century of which was within the Kingdom of Hungary. For all his life, he remained faithful to his principles and to his strong Slovak national creed. Pešťbudínske vedomosti and Matúš Dula MARCELA GBÚROVÁ The 1860s were marked by political softening in the Austrian mo narchy, which reflected favourably on the growth of the Slovak national movement as well as on the evolution of Slovak journalism. A direct con sequence of this softening was heightened political activity of Slovak na tionalists, which was set in motion at the national assembly at Turčiansky Svätý Martin on 6-7 June 1861. The same year saw the inception of the liberal-oriented journal Priateľ ľudu [Friend of the People] as a printing project of the young Slovak Intelligentsia, known as Mladá škola sloven ská, which was preparatory to the
establishment of their press medium Slovenské noviny [Slovak Paper] (1868 -1875). Pešťbudínske vedomosti [The Pest Buda Paper] mostly brought together supporters of Shir's move ment (which went down in history as Stará škola slovenská [The Old Slo vak School], who, despite various disappointments, did not renounce the Viennese policy, believing that it would fulfil most of the Slovaks' national demands from the Memorandum. In its introduction, the paper focuses on the conceptual framework of Pešťbudínske vedomosti, which was shaped by the contributions from a number of prominent represen tatives of Slovak public and political life of mostly conservative political attitudes (such as Ján Francisci-Rimavský, Ján Mallý-Dusarov, Ján Nepo muk Bobula or Peter Kellner) even though it also presented the legal and political positions of the most notable Slovak liberal, Ján Palárik.
Summary 347 The second part of the article focuses on the publishing initiatives of Matúš Dula, who was in touch with the Pest Buda newspaper in 1868 and 1869. The article particularly analyses a) Matúš Dula's open letter (signed as M. D. Hohoš) to Slovak Paper's editor-in-chief Ján Nepomuk Bobula and to its "lapvezér" (editor) László Jeszenszký, where he public ly reproached both for their hostile attitude towards the Slovak national association (founded in the autumn of 1867); b) a short text by Matúš Dula, in which he makes two announcements to the public - the informa tion about a pre-election meeting in the village of Blatnica, which had ex pressed unequivocal support for the Slovak candidate Ján Jesenský and, as part of the electioneering campaign, an appeal of the assembly to the neighbouring municipalities to vote in favour of the above candidate; c) Matúš Dula's support for the Charter concerning Matica slovenská and the city of Martin, cited in the paper of 29 May 1869 (vol. 9, no. 43, pp. 1 - 2); the Charter was tabled in the "Chamber of Deputies" by Viliam Pauliny-Tóth, a deputy from the Kulpin disctrict; d) detailed informa tion that Matúš Dula, who closely collaborated with the representatives of Matica slovenská and participated in the work with the young gen eration of Matica's supporters, was elected Chairman of the temporary committee of the Slovak Youth Association, a fact that was of crucial im portance for the future of this Slovak cultural and educational institution in the 19th century. Slovak solicitors and their activity in the national
movement in the late 19th century JOZEF VOZÁR The paper focuses on the efforts of prominent Slovak solicitors to pro tect the rights of the Slovak nation at the end of the 19th century. The de liberate denationalization of Slovak youth in Hungarian schools, the lack of Slovak secondary schools, the non-existence of a university where one could study in Slovak and the unceasing pressure of the Hungarian ru ling classes achieved their goal. The Slovak intelligentsia was limited to theology and law; but even in these areas, its proportion was far behind that in other nations of Hungary. The position of Slovak lawyers was even more difficult. Claiming their Slovak nationality prevented them from applying for positions in the Hungarian legal system. Nationally conscious Slovak lawyers of that period could only become solicitors.
348 Summary Knowledge of the law and of the workings of the state apparatus al lowed Slovak solicitors to help defend those who had been wronged by the injustice of the Hungarian legal system. Some of them even had first-hand experience with despotic treatment and abuse of rights by the Hungarian state. Yet even these facts did not deter Slovak solicitors from serving their people not only as defence counsels in ordinary legal dis putes, but also from founding local newspapers, printing houses, and engaging in the fields of culture and the church. The progress of educa tion was supposed to ensure the raising of the cultural and social levels even in the most remote regions of Slovakia. Their activities were wideranging. The most active Slovak lawyers realized that with the expan sion of banking and business, they could also ensure economic advance ment and prosperity of their people. Some of them founded or helped to found Slovak banks, thereby encouraging the emerging small businesses and Slovak industry. In the article, we have introduced five prominent Slovak solicitors who worked at the turn of the twentieth century - Michal Mudroň, Pa vol Mudroň, Stefan Fajnor, Matúš Dula and Miloš Stefanovič, capturing important milestones in their lives. They all grew up in an environment of nationally conscious Evangelical intelligentsia, where work for the na tion was a moral imperative. This atmosphere produced a number of outstanding figures endowed with qualities such as dedication, courage, honesty, responsibility, justice, tolerance, determination and hard work. Matúš
Dula and Czech-Slavic Unity in Prague NADEZDA JURČIŠINOVÁ As a leading figure in the Slovak political arena of the late 19th and early 20th century, Matúš Dula could not, and did not stand aside from the development of relations between Czechs and Slovaks, a process that resulted in the establishment of a common state composed of the two nations. While he supported the ideas of Czech-Slovak reciprocity, he also had some reservations. Being aware of the importance and benefits of Czech-Slovak cooperation and of the strengthening of ties between Slovaks and Czechs, especially in the cultural and economic areas, he encouraged these mostly through the power of his authority and his po sition in the Slovak national movement. This was demonstrated by his activities before and during the First World War. Following the establish-
Summary 349 ment of the Slovakophile association Českoslovanská jednota [Czech-Slavic Unity] in Prague in 1896, which turned into the main pre-war coordina ting body of Czech-Slovak cooperation and assistance to Slovaks, Dula joined its work as the association's fiduciary for the city of Turčiansky Sv. Martin and its surroundings. Dula's cooperation with the associa tion mainly consisted in supporting its activity and in his participation in some events organized by the association, especially in the regularly held Czech-Slovak meetings in Luhačovice between 1908 and 1913. Matúš Dula and Slovak politics (1900 - 1918) MIROSLAV PEKNÍK Matúš Dula was undoubtedly one of the most important Slovak poli ticians in the period preceding the establishment of Czechoslovakia. He had long been active in the Slovak National Party leadership. However, his activity was much broader in scope as he was also engaged in the economic and cultural spheres for the benefit of the Slovak nation. As a solicitor, he made extensive use of his rich knowledge and experience of Hungarian legislation, representing Slovak and Romanian politicians in political trials. After the Slovak National Party had refrained from contesting a seat in the Hungarian Parliament in 1884 - 1901, it was largely due to Matúš Dula's efforts that the party participated in the Hungarian parliamenta ry elections in 1901 with a new electoral program and the party's new or ganizational structure. And it was also because of his active involvement that Slovak politics achieved the best election result in Hungary in 1906. Later,
in the wake of the electoral failure in 1910, M. Dula looked for other avenues for Slovak national political life. This resulted in a new organizational form of the Slovak National Party in 1912. Following the disputes within the party, an independent Slovak People's Party was established in 1913. Subsequently, in 1914, as the new chairman of the Slovak National Party, M. Dula strove to reunite the divided Slovak po litical scene with a supra-partisan body. He presented a project of the Slovak National Council composed of the Slovak National Party, the Slovak People's Party and the Slovak Social Democrats. Although Dula managed to push through the project of the Slovak National Council at a meeting in Budapest in May 1914, it was no longer implemented due to the outbreak of the war.
350 Summary After 1910, Dula’s changed his strategy as he searched for allies to resolve the Slovak question in the Kingdom of Hungary. While until then, M. Dula had mostly looked towards tsarist Russia and towards cooperation among non-Hungarian peoples, what came to the fore in the following period was the 'Belvedere' orientation to the heir to the throne Francis Ferdinand and the Czech-Slovak reciprocity. Under fa vourable conditions, these were supposed to improve the status of the Slovak nation in the Habsburg monarchy. M. Dula stood at the head of the Slovak delegation at the audience with the heir apparent and par ticipated in meetings with Czech representatives in Luhačovice as part of Czech-Slovak reciprocity programme. The Sarajevo assassination and the outbreak of the war confronted M. Dula and Slovak politics with a different reality. Under the pressure of persecution of Slovak politicians from the Hun garian authorities, the Slovak National Party stopped its activities in the very first days of the war. Subsequently, M. Dula personally protested against the persecution of Slovak nationalists to Prime Minister István Tisza. In the given unfavourable circumstances, M. Dula and other Slovak politicians decided to go behind the scenes; they formed smaller groups in Martin, Ružomberok, Budapest, Vienna and other locations, which then informed each other about internal political conditions and the si tuation on the front while maintaining contacts with Czech politicians through the Vienna group. During the next period of the war, M. Dula, as the chairman of the
Slovak National Party, was repeatedly approached by the government officials, who asked him to organize a delegation of Slovak politicians that would publicly present support to the Hungarian government in 1915 and 1917. Yet, this was not to be. Slovak politics both at home and abroad converged to the idea of a common state with the Czech nation. Under Dula's leadership, a series of talks was held in 1918: the crucial state Martin legal assembly of Slovak politicians in May, the Budapest meeting on the establishment of the Slovak National Council in Septem ber and the Martin meeting that adopted the Declaration of the Slovak Nation on October 30. The establishment of Czechoslovakia meant the culmination of the Slovak political activities in Hungary as well as of Matúš Dula's political career.
Summary 351 Matúš Dula as Chairman of the Slovak National Council during the coup TOMÁŠ ADAMČÍK As Chairman of the Slovak National Party and the Slovak National Council, Matúš Dula played a key political role in Slovakia in the land mark year of 1918, when, under his leadership, on 30 October, the na tionally oriented participants adopted the Declaration of the Slovak Na tion at Turčiansky Svätý Martin. Despite some disputes within the party, Dula became the central political and moral authority during the difficult period of Slovakia's integration into Czechoslovakia. At the head of the 12-member executive committee of the Slovak National Council, he gra dually took over the administration of Slovakia and by mid-November 1918, together with the local committees of the Slovak National Council and the Guards, he was building the infrastructure for the newly emer ging Czechoslovak Republic. Following the retreat of the Czech army and the occupation of Turiec by the Hungarian troops, M. Dula was captured and, after his release, renounced cooperation with the Turiec authorities. The convoluted situation was further exacerbated by difficult relations of the SNC representatives with the Prague authorities, which belittled the institution's role and its influence in Slovakia. Disagreements also arose within the Club of Slovak Deputies in Prague. Furthermore, Matúš Dula's political decision-making was impeded by internal conflicts both with members of the Slovak National Party and also with representatives of the SNC's executive committee. Despite the complicated situation, in
his efforts to mobilize the Slovak political and social scene in late autumn and early December, Dula took steps to centralize power at Turčiansky Svätý Martin. These efforts were frustrated not only by misunderstan dings within the Slovak National Council, as a result of which Dula de cided to resign from his post of chairman, but further activity of the su preme revolutionary Slovak body was practically halted by a decision of the Prague authorities. The delegation of Vavro Srobár as Minister Pleni potentiary for the Administration of Slovakia in December 1918 stopped the work of the Slovak National Council under the leadership of Matúš Dula. By his Decree No. 6/1919 Coll, of 8 January 1919, with effect from 23 January 1919, Šrobár officially dissolved the Slovak National Council, including its local national councils and committees. Despite the SNC's demise and the end of Matúš Dula's chairmanship of the supreme Slovak revolutionary body, the political and adminis-
352 Summary trative power in Turiec remained in the hands of the Dula family with Μ. Dula’s son Igor being appointed as the new Turiec mayor by Vavro Srobár himself; this move calmed down the situation in the county. Matúš Dula did not stay away from high politics even when the situ ation diffused in Czechoslovakia, serving as a senator, as chairman of the Club of Slovak Deputies, chairman of the immunity committee and deputy chairman of the National Assembly. Even at an advanced age, he took part in a number of official events. The revival of Matica Slovenská and Matúš Dula JOZEF SCHWARZ The article focuses on a certain phase of the life of Matúš Dula, a Slo vak politician and a somewhat forgotten and disrespected figure, whose background was Martin, the seat of Matica Slovenská, and who, in spite of this fact, played a significant part in the establishment of Czecho-Slovakia, being actively involved in the Slovak sovereign contribution to this historic event. In 1863, the year of the foundation of Matica slovenská, as a 17-yearold. Dula spoke to the public at Turčiansky Svätý Martin, calling on Slo vaks to remain determined and persistent in the fight for their national rights. 1871 saw the establishment of the Slovak National Party. Hence, from the 1870s onwards, Matúš Dula took part in all the party's major undertakings to later become its longest-serving vice-chairman. On the eve of the First World War in the spring of 1914, already at the age of 68, he took over the party leadership. On 24 May 1918, a confidential meeting of the party led by Matúš Dula was held on
the initiative of the presidium of the Slovak National Party; this started off the breakup with the Hungarians in the domestic arena, when the party embarked on the Czechoslovak path. The process culminated in the Martin convention, which took place on 30 October 1918, with the adoption of the Martin Declaration and the establishment of the second Slovak National Council headed by Matúš Dula. These moves resulted in some kind of dual government in Slovakia, repre sented by the Slovak National Council and at the same time by the new administrative bodies of the Czecho-Slovak state. On 1 January 1919, Minister Plenipotentiary for the Administration of Slovakia V. Šrobár legislatively resurrected Matica slovenská, thereby creating the condi-
Summary 353 tions for the preservation of the historical idea of the constitution in the radically changed position of the Slovak nation. Matúš Dula's political career did not end with the dissolution of the Slovak national councils. He became a deputy of the Interim National Assembly in Prague, even one of its vice-chairmen, and the Honorary Chairman of the Slovak Na tional and Peasant Party. From August 1919, he also served as one of the four chairmen of Matica slovenská. During the first seven years of the First Republic, when he was fully active in Matica (until his death in 1926), Matúš Dula primarily symbolized the organization's continuity in time and space. Matúš Dula, a solicitor (1846 - 1926) VIKTÓRIA HELLENBART The ambition of this paper is to put together a mosaic of Matúš Du la's career as a solicitor, who had found himself in a setting shaped by the legal regulations of the time that controlled the practice of law and affected his own practice with fellow solicitors in the legal environment in which he worked throughout his life. It is safe to say that this also largely determined his existence. Matúš Dula began his legal studies in Vienna in 1864, to continue with his education in Budapest in 1867. After earning his doctoral degree, he passed the bar examination in Budapest on 3 July 1871 and opened a law office in October of the same year in Turčiansky Sv. Martin. Matúš Dula thus entered the Bar Association in Banská Bystrica to become a regular member of the Association's committee in 1886 and 1887 and, later, its elected substitute. In the earlier period
of his practice, he fought a legal battle for the restoration of the abolished Slovak Gym nasium in Martin, and, as a solicitor, he played a major part in educating the next generation of solicitors. He was actively engaged in the struggle for the rights of the Slovak nation, yet, he appeared in it not only as a de fence attorney but also as a defendant, being prosecuted by the Hunga rian authorities for his national political activity, tried in political court cases and imprisoned. Matúš Dula had worked as a solicitor between October 1871 and 1914, when he requested to be released from the Association to be able to devote more time to his political activities as the new chairman of the Slovak National Party after the death of Pavel Mudroň. Following
354 Summary the establishment of the First Czechoslovak Republic, he was re-entered into the register of solicitors, and, in the period between 9 September 1919 and 31 December 1924, he was listed in the register of solicitors in Turčiansky sv. Martin, when less than two years before his death he asked to be removed from the Association. In the context of Matúš Dula's legal work, one cannot omit to mention that, together with other members of the Slovak National Council, he contributed to the successful establishment of an independent Czecho slovak state in 1918. Polish, Moravian and Czech judiciary as a counterpoint to Matúš Dula's experience VLADIMIR GONÉC Moravian, Czech and even more so Polish lawyers, generational peers of M. Dula, held the highest official posts in Cisleithania, whether judi cial, ministerial, or academic. Their political - often very demonstrative -steps were tolerated as, in the post-1860 period, this gradually became part of Cisleithania's political culture. Such state of affairs in the much more cultured near-western neighbourhood serves as a contrast to the conditions that Matúš Dula himself, along with other Slovak politically active lawyers, had to endure in Hungary. In the figure of M. Dula, we see paradoxical juxtaposition of his rela tive political conservatism with a socially progressive, even radical, role. In degenerate regimes such as that existing in the Kingdom of Hungary, of all the types of lawyers usually only a barrister was the true defender of the law and, in extreme cases, the defender of the civic principle. Trust and
memory: a problem of identity JOZEF LYSÝ The "Slovak nation" has a complex, typically European formation history. What has been decisive in the process is common and accumu lated historical experience. Ethnic and confessional principles of "self identity" have led to disputes, to disintegration, to cultural degradation, to the exile of prominent national figures. Our example shows that the
Summary 355 principle of "homeland" is convenient for international unions, inter national cultural competition, for overcoming limitations and obstacles. While in nature, a hill is a hill, in history, even the biggest delusion can be interpreted as truth. This naturally leads to paradoxes. The transi tion from a liberally constrained modernity to an organized one in the European context required dealing with the republican form of civil de mocracy, of a rule of the citizenry by selecting power structures that are reasonably independent. These independent governing structures con stitute a republic, while the hegemony of the governed entity over its structures constitutes a democracy. Such has also been the Slovak way. The image of Matúš Dula in posthumous discourse LUKÁŠ KRAJČÍR In the presented study, we analyse Matúš Dula's perception by the Slovak public officials following his death. We have tackled the research subject through the preserved periodicals of political, regional, econo mic, religious and socio-cultural nature while focusing on the opinions expressed by a range of ideationally and ideologically anchored intellec tuals, from national-conservative nationalists and Ľudáks, through cen trist agrarians and populists, to left-wing and liberally oriented national socialists, social democrats and communists. Such a broad scope allows one to observe Matúš Dula through diffe rent lenses and thus to trace exclusively subjective views on this promi nent figure, conditioned and defined by the above conceptual and ideo logical anchorings. Quite naturally, Dula
was extensively discussed in Národnie noviny [National paper], the press medium of the Slovak National Party, the entity that he had co-founded and also headed towards the end of his life. The views presented on its pages were exclusively favourable, un critical and sometimes even glorifying. Incidentally, he also featured prominently in the press media of the Czech and Slovak agrarians, be ing closely linked with the movement during the first democratic elec tions in April 1920 after the creation of Czechoslovakia. At the time of the breakup of Austria-Hungary, he acted as a liaison between the various Slovak political currents, which "at the twelfth hour" decided to set out on the road to Czechoslovak statehood. Nor was he left out by Slovak
356 Summary and Czechoslovak Ľudáks, who viewed approvingly his right-wing, na tionalist and at the same time conservative base. An objective, critical view on Matúš Dula was perhaps most com mon in Czech non-partisan periodicals, which did not feel in any way associated with, or indebted to, him and thus could enjoy more freedom in assessing his work and attitudes. This was particularly true for Lidové noviny [People's paper] and the journal Československá republika [Czecho slovak Republic], which pilloried his strict conservatism and narrow mindedness, the traits that limited the chances of cooperation with other public officials and movements. Local periodicals in Slovakia rather released brief reports about his death, disregarding his regional activities. Quite logically, Dula, as the chairman of Matica slovenská, was not forgotten by Slovenské pohľady, a periodical issued by the above organisation, or by the liberally oriented Prúdy. In addition, he received wide coverage in Evangelical Church pa pers, which mentioned his active involvement in the services of Slovak Evangelical Church entities in the pre-revolutionary struggle for Slovak interests. Although all ideological currents emphasized Dula's diverse talents, skills and experience, many agreed that his career path was highly posi tive and beneficial for the Slovak nation. In the first place, it was mostly Dula's role of a bridge builder for the Slovak political representation of the autumn of 1918 that was described by all as a very correct and necessary strategy under the given circumstances. Thus, Dula
did not provoke any controversy even after his death, maintaining this position throughout the entire period of the First Republic.
