Zusammenfassung: | Paul Verhoeven's 1990 science fiction film, Total Recall, is highly regarded for its mind-bending story and dazzling visuals. It is based on a short story by Philip K. Dick and it brought in $261 million for CAROLCO. Both of Verhoeven's previous American films were scored by Basil Poledouris, but the director handed the reins over to another veteran. Verhoeven is quoted as having said, "when I want brawn, I hire Poledouris, and when I want brains, I hire Goldsmith." As it turned out, Goldsmith delivered both. Despite having written for the sci-fi genre - with scores like Capricorn One, Alien, and Star Trek - Total Recall has established itself as a shining jewel in the composer's illustrious crown. It is cleverly constructed and stands among his most detailed, complicated, and impressively thunderous action music. In fact, the music Goldsmith penned for the film is so fiendishly complex that the original recording sessions had to be scrapped and moved to London because the players were incapable of performing it. Goldsmith presents his themes in nearly every possible way, fully or partially, by every member of a large orchestra. The acoustic ensemble is augmented with three synthesizers: KORG MI, Oberheim DPXI, and the Yamaha DX7II. Goldsmith blends the sounds of acoustic woodwinds with synthesized to such a magnificent effect, that the theme takes on an otherworldly quality. In addition to the melodic content, Goldsmith uses the synthesizers to create new percussive elements that beautifully complement the percussion instruments of the orchestra. Now musicians, music students, conductors - any music lover - can study Total Recall in this durable, high-quality edition, reproduced and carefully re-edited from the original handwritten manuscript. |
