co CHAPTER 1 CHAPTER 2 THE ORIGINS OF ART: THE SPIRIT WORLD ART, RITUAL AND RELIGIOUS BELIEFS In this chapter students develop an understanding, Students consider how artworks can provide us with through looking at images, that the world is made clues to people’s spiritual beliefs, even from earliest up of many diverse religions, spiritual beliefs and times. They discuss the ways in which traditions and philosophies. They show some awareness of and rituals evolve overtime, in order to remain relevant insight into images and objects of early human art. to the societies that practise them. CHAPTER 3 CHAPTER 4 THE IMPACT OF CHRISTIANITY ON ART IN SOUTH AFRICA DARK FEELINGS: SYMBOLISM, MOODS AND NIGHTMARES Here students learn about the impact that mission Students consider how artists use expressive forms schools had on South African art history. They consider how some artists access images from the irrational mind or from dream-states, and understand the concept of chance as a Surrealist technique for deriving images from the unconscious. They are introduced to certain artists in South Africa who were influenced by Surrealism indirectly or directly. Students develop their own surreal image, through a process of montage, drawing and painting; and finally, using photography, they create a “surrealist” self-portrait. |
