Summary The Dead-End Road to Socialist Detective Fiction: The concept of the socialist detective story and its (non)realisation in Czech film The detective genre in Czechoslovakia, in both literary and film form, lost contact with the world context after 1948, mainly for ideological reasons. The concept of socialist detective fiction was formulated in the late 1950s as a distinctive "progres sive” form of the genre — and at the same time as a specific form of its defence. The concept emerged as a reaction to contemporary Western genre production, particularly the police procedural, and was intended to signify a qualitatively artis tically superior form of the genre based primarily on a class-determined depiction of criminal activity and a celebratory portrayal of the work of the security forces as defenders of the socialist establishment. The publication is divided into two parts. In the first, we look at the issue of socialist detective fiction and its cinematic form from various angles and meth odological positions. Firstly, Michal Sýkora presents the origin and development of the concept of the socialist detective story, the context from which the concept emerged, its rejection in the 1960s and its restoration during the normalization period. Then Marek Holan in chapter "On the Functions and Transformations of Genre Communication in Czech Detective Film” thematises the phenomenon of detective fiction within the framework of socialist (centrally planned) cinema. He defines genre through the lens of selected texts from the literature of the field (Rick Altman, John
Frow) as a complex field of modes of behaviour and interaction that is manifested on an everyday level and in a variety of situations. The central dimension of genre communication/genre behaviour is the pragmatic dimension. The chapter traces the development and transformations of genre in the structure of Czechoslovak cinema. For these purposes, the text offers as a possible interpretive key a breakdown of the communicative strategies of socialist detective fiction into three primary rhetorical modes. The first of these is the "transitional” mode, which manifests itself primarily in the early years of socialist cinema and is related to the non-anchoring of the detective fiction genre in the structure of the film industry. The second is the diversified modus, which is already based on relatively established 150
genre practices and focuses on their codification and variability. Thus, the mixing of socialist detective fiction with other communicative strategies — comic elements, historicizing gaze, social criticism, etc. — is also considered. The third rhetorical modus is abstracted mainly from detective fictions of the so-called normalization period and is specifically related to the genre emptiness that occurs in that era. The inclination towards a purely instrumental notion of entertainment, which resigns itself to the creation of more complex meanings and corresponds to the ideological functionality of the normalization audiovisual, is identified as a defining feature of socialist detective fiction of the era. In the third chapter, Luboš Ptáček compares the use of language in the detective series Hříšní lidé města pražského (The Sinful People ofPrague) and Třicet případů ma jora Zemana (Thirty Cases of Major Zeman) by Jiří Sequens based on sociolinguistic analysis based on the theory of Μ. A. K. Halliday. The series differ in the time of their creation, the period depicted, the subgenres of crime, the degree of stylization, and ideologization, yet both are united by a similar work with the language of crime and law that reveals an identical model of power. The language used on both sides of the law acts as an indicator of social differences and power status. Both series show a society in which crime occurs, but the side of the law is in full control. The second part — again in the plurality of methodological approaches — brings a set of case studies devoted to the fundamental
achievements of Czecho slovak film detective fiction. Stanislav Pecháč analyses Vladimir Cech's series of films featuring Captain Tůma and Lieutenant Líbal, known as the “Alibi" trilogy. He emphasises the founding function of the series for the form of the modern Czechoslovak film detective story and traces the genre and style transformation of the trilogy from a socialist detective story (essentially a police procedural) to an almost parody of cinéma-vérité. It is the presence of humour in the trilogy that foreshadows the future development of the genre. In the chapter “The Architecture of Darkness as a Defining Feature of the Fic tional World”, Marek Holan analyses four films by Petr Schulhoff featuring the character of Major Kalas through the lens of the theory of fictional worlds. The text attempts to answer the question whether it is possible to identify something as a fictional universe based on the films of the Kalas tetralogy (and if so, what are its defining features). The following are discussed in turn: the communicative strate gies of the fictional worlds of the Kalas tetralogy, their basic thematic and motivic constants, the protagonist/detective (as a defining element of detective fiction), the specific atmosphere of the films as a semantic construct, and the specific poetics of the Kalas tetralogy as an overarching creative approach that systematizes the 151
sub-parameters under discussion into a unified structure that determines the final form of the assumed fictional universe. Tereza Pudlovská and Nikol Zezulová, in the chapter "The Transformations of Captain Exner", illustrate the transformation of the status of the detective genre in domestic cinema in the 1960s and during the normalisation period by means of the adaptation of two novels by Vaclav Erben. The attempt to create a film series with Captain Exner, following the model of the "Alibi” trilogy and Kalas tetralogy, was confronted with the fact that the literary models did not correspond to the ideas of the Barrandov Film Studio management about the form of the socialist detective story. Primarily due to the portrayal of Exner's character, Erbens books were not a suitable adaptation source, because the character of the elegant and extravagant bon vivant did not fulfil the idea of a typi cal socialist investigator. In the last chapter, Anna Kořenková and Anna Kvítková focus on the use of humour (in the sense ofJosef Skvorecky’s famous statement that the detective story is "a combination of murder and fun”) as a subversive definition against the doctrine of the socialist detective story, both by emphasising the playful ness of the genre and by the unserious portrayal of the police officer. The combination of the detective story with comedy, so characteristic of many genre films of the 1960s, on the one hand defined to a certain extent the domestic "entertainment') i.e. non-ideological form of the genre, on the other hand, it is at the same time an act of rejection
(not only artistic, but also ideological) of the con cept of the socialist detective story through the subversive portrayal of the police officers, which is primarily based on the rejection of his standardised portrayal as a self-sacrificing and brave defender of socialist legality. The present publication traces the circumstances and context of the promo tion of socialist detective fiction and the various forms of both the definition of resistance to this official doctrine and, on the contrary, its submission. At the same time, our work documents how Czech film genre detective fiction, after years of stagnation (the 1950s), attempted to approach and match contemporary Western production (the 1960s), only to move away from contact with world genre produc tion altogether (the 1970s and 1980s). While in the 1960s, which are nowadays perceived by both the critics and public as the imaginary golden age of Czech detec tive film, the creators more or less rejected the theory of the socialist detective story, in the following normalisation period, on the contrary, the detective and crime genre was fully subordinated to the ideological service of the regime. The culmination of this trend is represented in particular by contemporary television productions, especially the series Třicet případů majora Zemana (Thirty Cases of Major Zeman). 152
