Zusammenfassung:"This publication is an expanded, edited and annotated version of a shorter online lecture entitled, The imperative of Utu/Ubuntu in scholarship if Africana studies and research are to be celebrated as liberated zones in academia, delivered as the keynote address at the Africana Studies and Research Center, Cornell University’s 50th Anniversary Celebration, on Wednesday, May 5, 2021. The original version of the paper was delivered as a public lecture at the University of Montana on September 23, 2019, under the title, "I am because we are: the imperative of Utu/Ubuntu in transformational scholarship." The author discusses the philosophy of the meaning of Utu and Ubuntu. She argues that knowledge and scholarship can either be colonizing, alienating and enslaving; or alternatively, they can be conscientizing, humanizing and liberating, creating new human beings with the agency to transform the world for the better. The second option constitutes what I call utu/ubuntu rooted-scholarship, which should define Africana studies, research and scholarship, if they are to be celebrated as liberated zones in academia."--
