Census register of heavy-armed fellowships of mounted courtiers of King Sigismund I the Old from the years 1518-1525 Summary Of the numerous functions attributed to the royal court, perhaps the least attention in research has been paid to its military, and particularly combat role. This issue is impor tant insofar as the military dimension of the functioning of the royal court is associated with the most numerous, most representative, privileged group of mounted courtiers, which enjoyed particular royal confidence. As is well known, courtiers on horseback guarded the monarch, searched for quarters during journeys, dealt with war indem nities, recruited soldiers and often commanded them, served as deputies, were legates to regional assemblies, rode with orders to the armies, collected taxes gathered by col lectors or vetted royal estates. Occasionally, however, attention is given to the mounted courtiers in their original function - the permanent, trained retreat of the regular army, which was at the royal disposal and which the monarch could use at will. The issue sits, as it were, at the intersection of inquiries in military history and court history. Researchers of both these specialities conduct significant findings in the areas of their interest. In studies concerning the organisation and composition of the courts of Polish rulers of the Jagiellonian dynasty and their wives, mounted courtiers occupy an important place; however, these studies pay attention to their personalities, origins, duration of their stay at court, numbers and rules of maintenance of their
fellowships, their careers at court and after their service to the king, but, for obvious reasons, the issue of the military use of the court horde usually remains on the far margin in these accounts. Military historians, in their numerous works on the course of individual cam paigns or battles, generally recognise the participation of royal courtiers in them, and domestic historiography has recently been enriched by separate studies devoted exc lusively to the presence and role of curienses in military operations. In spite of this, or perhaps precisely because the subject requires a research perspective from two diffe rent sides, the royal court ensign in the Jagiellonian period still awaits its researcher. According to the literature on the subject, the military or combat role of mounted courtiers was reduced precisely during the reign of Sigismund the Old, when a royal bodyguard consisting of drabants (also known as stipatoreś) was created. However, a closer look at the participation of mounted courtiers in military actions during this pe riod indicates the monarch’s constant recourse to this type of army. In the first half of the 16th century, in connection with the struggle for the northern, eastern and southern
156 borders of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Sigismund the Old frequently reached for court forces. The list of military operations in which mo unted courtiers took part includes the Moscow War of 1507-1508, the Moldavian ex pedition of 1509, the Tartar invasions of 1512, 1516-1519, the Prussian War of 15191521, the Turkish and Tartar invasions of 1524, the Moldavian War of 1530-1538 and the Moscow War of 1534—1537. It is worth remembering that the king also made use of court posts during the Gdansk tumult in 1526. It should be noted that in most cases the monarch was involved in ap pointing the composition of a banner of mounted courtiers to carry out specific actions, rather than using the entire group of courtiers. Such a disposition of a troop of mounted courtiers is reminiscent of an Old Polish huffer, which consisted of several to a dozen flags, usually numbering between 50 and 150 horses. Similarly, a huffer of mounted courtiers could be formed, from which fellowships were separated to be incorporated into a banner and sent to carry out specific military actions (reconnaissance, covering, striking). Only rarely, when the monarch went to the theatre of operations in person, he was accompanied by most of his mounted courtiers. There is no doubt, therefore, that in the vital theatre of war of the first half of the 16th century, Sigismund the Old’s mounted courtiers had a permanent role. Due to the ir relatively small numbers, the court forces were of limited combat value in the overall armed forces used in military operations, but it must
not be forgotten that they were tro ops of special importance — well-trained, loyal, characterised by high morale and pos sessing royal confidence. The service of the mounted courtiers was organised along the lines of the com panion system used in the Polish army of the time. They entered the court together with the horse-fellowships, which, however, were not part of the court structure, being subordinate to and serving the courtier. The composition of the fellowship depended, as in the cavalry, on the ability of the companion-courtier, who had to provide horses and servants to guarantee the high le vel of tasks carried out by the post. Gradually, as in the popular defence units, the aim was to reduce the number of posts at the expense of increasing their number and, above all, their quality. The analysis of the source materials allows one to see the regularities resulting from the battles carried out - in view of the planned actions, new post offices were enlisted for service, and many already present at the king’s side were increased in number. In the period of peace, the pre-war staff levels were usually restored. The publication is a critical edition of a manuscript deposited in the Archiwum Główny Akt Dawnych (Central Archives of Historical Records) in Warsaw, in the sec tion Archiwum Skarbu Koronnego, Branch 85: Popisowe Rejestry Wojska Koronne go 1474-1758 under signature no. 13, which is part of the series „Census Registers of Crown Army with list of men, horses and weapons” („Rejestry popisowe wojska ko ronnego z wyrażeniem ludzi, koni i broni” from the
years 1474-1578. The book conta ins a census register of horse-fellowships of the courtiers of King Sigismund I the Old serving as heavy-armed men. The entries date from 3rd February 1518 to 15th Decem ber 1525 (with the exception of a single, later entry, relating to one settlement of 12th and 21th March 1526).
157 The description of each of the 149 recorded fellowships consists of a heading con taining the details of the courtier and the composition of the post at the time of the first showing off, as well as, in most cases, details of their history over the years in which the courtier remained in court service, the changes made to them and the payment of indemnities due to unfit for service or lost horses. Deletions often occurring in the so urce testify to the termination of service in a group of mounted courtiers, and only in selected cases to the death of a courtier while in service. While the information about the courtiers-companions is usually very brief, each horse in the post is described in great detail. The characterisation of the animal opens with information on its type. It should be emphasised that although we are dealing with a book of courtiers serving on great (kopijnicze) horses, the predominant horses on its pages are shooting (strzelcze) horses, and there are also horses characteristic of light-armed horses (e.g. geldings or bedeves). Additions valuing the horse as good, equal (medium) or small were routinely used. These are important from an economic per spective, as they are an indication of the value of the animal and the amount of any compensation for its loss or mutilation. The amount of the payment depended on the animal and was usually 18 (good copying horse), 11 (copying horse, good shooting horse) or 7 (shooting horse, gelding, other) florins, hence the detail of the descriptions was of great importance. It should also be noted that any ‘variation’
(“odmiana”), i.e. the replacement of an animal, had to take into account the equal or greater value of the placed horse in relation to the previously shown off one. Using detailed characterisation, the colours were defined, often using a variety of terms for the basic colouring. The ability to walk lateral amble (innochoda), i.e. to stand simultaneously on the right foreleg and hind leg and then on the left foreleg and hind leg, also appears more than once in the descriptions. Descriptions of the animal’s special marks are an important element. According to the knowledge of hippies, the different colouring of individual limbs, the appearance of stars, spots or splashes on the head or back made it possible to determine the animal’s fighting potential, its stamina and its susceptibility to training. All these elements demonstrate a great concern for the quality of the animals and their fighting potential. An important part of the description of individual horses in the postcards is the in formation concerning the stigma. Their absence or presence, the place of its burning were noted, most often supplementing these data with a graphic representation of this identifying mark. There are 419 images of horse stigmata in the book; it is rare that in formation about the stigma was not accompanied by a drawing, but instead was descri bed in words. The absence of a horse stigma was also recorded. The description of the peculiar history of each fellowship also includes details of the date, place and circumstances of replacement of horses or changes in the number of fellowships, as
well as the amount of compensation in the event of loss, illness or unsuitability of the horse for further service, the date and place of its payment and the official who was responsible for it. All these successive actions - show-off, exchange, loss of animal, injuries, compen sation - were accompanied by dates, in the majority of cases daily. Dates are recorded in Latin not only in the entries in this language, but also in the Polish-language parts. Dating in Polish is rare and concerns a few selected saints’ memories and two Marian
158 feasts. The presence of Polish-language dating notes should be seen as a manifestation of the wider implementation of the Polish language into treasury documentation. The dating used dates of the feasts calendar (calendarium festorum), both fixed and mova ble, with the former far outnumbering the latter. The small number of feasts used did not allow all the days of the year to be marked directly. Avoiding the use of more complicated and less legible indirect dating was made possible by the use of the cisjojan, a product of medieval computationalism, which combined the principles of mnemonics and computational art and the cryptogram and allowed each day of the year to be marked without additional data. The book which is the subject of the edition used the cisjojans of the Cracow Cathe dral, belonging to the Polish-Silesian family of cisjojans. It is worth noting that this method of marking time was practised extensively in the treasury administration in the Duchy of Głogów-Opawa during the reign of Sigismund Jagiellonian, and during the reign of this monarch in Poland the use of the cisjojan for dating in military and treasu ry documentation, known and used also in an earlier period, became well established. Dating with the use of the holiday calendar concerns about 70% and with the use of the cisjojan about 30% of the dating records in the ledger, but - quite surprisingly - it was with the use of the cisjojan that more days of the year were dated. The entries in the book do not make it clear who was responsible for keeping this register. According to the findings
concerning the court of King Jan Olbracht, the com pilation of registers of royal courtiers was the responsibility of the court ensign. This office appeared on a permanent basis at the end of the reign of Casimir the Jagiello nian and, it is assumed, may have initially been connected with the royal court ensign (vexilliarii cubiculariorum regiorum). It is therefore reasonable to assume that the census register of the mounted cour tier’s fellowships from 3rd February 1518 was kept - possibly until his death in Janu ary 1520. - the then Ensign Stanislaw Chroberski, whose five-horse fellowship was then recorded as the first. A noteworthy clue that supports the idea that it was Chrober ski who set up the ledger, made the court postal entries in February 1518, are the forms kyerzi and kralovi / kralovskeye, which are characteristic of some of the entries from 1518 and 1519, and which may indicate his links with Silesia. These in the case of Sta nislaw Chroberski were clear. It is even more difficult to indicate unequivocally who kept the book after the first list was made and who was responsible for making entries certifying changes in the fellowships. After the death of Stanislaw Chroberski, the office of court ensign was va cant for a long time, until 1528. As can be judged from the testimonies relating to the court of Jan Olbracht, the keeping of the register was entrusted to the treasurer. At the time of the compilation of the census register, which is the subject of this edition, the re was a long-lasting vacancy of fifteen years (1510-1525) in the office of court
treasu rer. It would therefore appear that the responsibility for accounting for courtiers’ parti cipation with their fellowships in military actions conducted in the period 1518-1526, which the register covers, rested with treasurer Mikołaj Szydłowiecki (1480-1532), who held that office in the years 1515-1532. As can be seen from the register records, it was the treasurer Szydłowiecki who was often noted as receiving reports of the loss or unsuitability of a horse for service, and
159 he made the payments. Apart from the treasurer, other people also received and regi stered information about „giving in damages” (dawanie w szkody) for lost horses for which compensation was due to courtiers. In the period covered by the treasury re gister, payments for horses were regularly made by Mikołaj Tomicki, Court Consta ble, and quite frequently by Piotr Kmita Sobieński (1477-1553), Court Marshal. In isolated cases, damages were also reported to Jan Boner, Grand Master of Kraków, and in special situations also to Mikołaj Wolski, Court Marshal of Queen Bona (hor ses belonging to her courtiers) and to Jakub Kuncewicz further. Court Constable of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1522 in Vilnius, in 1519 also to Jan Tarło, a trusted courtier, future countryman and Gołuchowski (probably Rafał - a Sandomierz sub judge). It is not uncommon for damage to be referred to the king himself and it was the monarch who decided, for example, to direct such a horse to a specific location. Census register, as is to be presumed, remained in the treasury office in Cracow and was supplemented by information from other treasury documents, often notes of a han dy nature. Some of these, despite this draft nature, were incorporated into the treasu ry records. The use of such sources of information, which sometimes did not arrive on time or were not available to the keepers of the register, can be seen in its content, as in individual cases room was left for supplementing information once it had been ob tained or, perhaps, verified. The languages of the presented book are Polish
and Latin, with the former predomi nating. Both languages resemble medieval monuments in the way they are realised in the notes under discussion, and thus do not reflect the state of the language of the Re naissance in which the book was written. The traces of a bygone era can be seen in the multifunctionality of the graphemes used in the text, the ways in which words are ab breviated and the inconsistency in the spelling of local and personal names, as well as the forms of abbreviations used and the use of capital letters in Latin and Polish proper names by the writers. Subjected to a critical edition, the source appears not only as an important testimo ny to the Old Polish financial system and a source for linguistic research, but above all as valuable material for the study of the history of the Renaissance court community, with particular emphasis on its military role. As such, it is hoped that it will make a si gnificant contribution to further research into the area at the intersection of the history of the court and the military history of the last Jagiellons. An integral part of the publication are indexes of persons and places, as well as an appendix with stigmatic drawings. In the indexes, surnames, first names and place na mes are given in contemporary forms, in italic brackets taking into account all forms occurring in the source text.
