Summary A Folklore Collector's Travel Book: Rudolf Põldmäe‘s Fieldwork Diaries Throughout his life, the Estonian folklorist, literary scholar and cul tural historian Rudolf Põldmäe (1908-1988) jotted down more than 10,000 manuscript pages in the course of his folklore collecting activ ities. On assignment from director of the Estonian Folklore Archives Oskar Loorits, Põldmäe already began to collect folklore as a student, aiming to store terminology of mythology and belief-related practices from throughout Harju County. From there, he branched out to the neighbouring Lääne and Viru Counties, while eventually his range of activities would reach even the furthest peripheries of Estonia in Võru and Petseri Counties along the border with Russia and Latvia, as well as the island of Saaremaa in the West. Each expedition had been set a fixed aim, yet Põldmäes interests and observations would always stretch across any pre-existing boundaries. The Estonian Folklore Archives preserve his collecting diaries from 16 different expeditions that took place in the years 1929-1938 and 1957-1958. Põldmäes diaries are not limited to mere chronological reports. For mally, the content of the text remains between the beginning and end of the expeditions, yet the writer’s thoughts often soar far above and away from particular situations. Põldmäes diaries impress with their scope and idealism. The level of generalisation increases together with the author’s experiences; the reader obtains a generalised overview of local country folk seen not so much as individuals, but as a memory bank of
folklore and carriers of the Zeitgeist. The formulation of the material was governed by prescribed rules. The Estonian Folklore Archives was founded in 1927, meaning that the format of the collected material had to correspond to an established
430 archival system. Today’s term ‘fieldwork’ was not in use at the time, and initially the activity was called gathering and not collecting. In the folkloristics of the first half of the 1930s it was customary to call the singers and storytellers “objects”; thus the items recorded in note books were accompanied by separate lists of objects. Põldmäe was methodical, yet creative, and introduced spontaneous variation into his usage of abbreviations and ways of notation, thus escaping becom ing mechanical. The initial period of collecting to a great degree coincided with Põld mäe’s youthful self-exploration and intellectual maturation. His dia ries contain long conversations with himself on various topics that, as a rule, concern his speciality or culture more generally; in a way, he keeps trying to define for himself all the phenomena he comes across. He noted that he was often prone to deviate from the topic, yet for gave himself the tendency without blaming himself too much, justi fying this by arguing that his meandering thoughts were inspired by collecting. Põldmäes diaries have a distinct individuality and are recognisa ble starting from the very first sentences. It seems that he had a firm understanding of what could be considered suitable material for a travel diary and what could not. In a sense, in the shadow of so-called objective information, all diaries testify to the author’s character and principles, background and origin. There is to be no public spilling of the secrets from the depths of one’s heart! Everything needs to remain idealistic, purposeful,
decent, yet must not be flat or colourless. Põldmäes style is rather more expressively literary and rich in metaphors than dry-as-dust scholarly. If the facial expressions of the “objects” and details of their living environments do not bear a specifically eth nographic message, they will remain unrevealed. Põldmäe primarily focuses on everything that has to do with education and culture, i.e. the intellectual plane. Põldmäes own behaviour can be interpreted as professional inhab iting of a role, the adoption of the guise of actor, of which he himself seems to be quite aware. A folklore collector’s visits will always have a specific aim. Yet there are several possible ways of reaching the goal and thus the collector will often be faced with problems of an eth ical nature, to be solved according to the best of his or her abilities. Põldmäe knows that the best results are often achieved by “howling together with the wolves” - having a few drinks in the company of
men, agreeing to what the women are saying, pretending to have prob lems in order to learn healing formulas - instead of forcing others to conform to one’s own principles. It is not like him to leave the arena as a loser. Still, in some rare cases he failed to win the trust of an inter viewee. On several occasions he also felt disappointment - his stand ards were high. Põldmäe moved in a traditional agrarian setting where centuries-old traditions survived, even though the approach of major change could already be felt in the air. Far-away corners of the country offered the young scholar of culture opportunities for contacts with archaic ways of life different from those he had experienced at home, or worldviews influenced by religious movements. On the basis of his fieldwork, the young Põldmäe, who would later become a scholar of the literary out put of the Moravian Brethren, made important observations on the influence of prayer houses on “cultured” thinking. He was more than sceptical about the enlightening influence of religion. The value that ranked highest in his view was archaic folk art, which is understand able if we take into consideration the aim of his travels. According to Põldmäes judgement the doctrine of grace of the Moravian Brethren had had a paralysing effect on the people’s intellectual development. At the same time, his own worldview had first and foremost been affected by the light of education - he did not consider the tales he was collect ing to be true, but primarily valued them as “poetry” or “the harvest”. His ideal was to obtain everything a
person might know, and he often uses the metaphor of exhausting - informants might have felt after the interviews that they had nothing more to give. At times, Põld mäe also speaks of his own feelings. His mood might drop if there was a lack of “objects”; when meeting a less-than-bright person in his own home county he feels ashamed because of the presence of a colleague; he can be angry at himself for having asked inappropriate questions. Põldmäe strove to avoid a routine as best he could, attempting to be genuine or leave a natural impression. Occasionally, the feeling of trust and friendship may have amounted to more than a professional per forming of a role, as evidenced by his visiting several people repeatedly over the years. The greater part of Põldmäes collected material has been recorded by hand, in a kind of shorthand that helped him avoid dictation and slowing the flow of the narrative. The text becomes more vivid due to skilfully sketched drawings and schema, and later also photographs. 431
432 Yet it is still words that constitute the main means of communication; at times they are so abundant that the sentences spread over several lines. In writing his collection diaries, Põldmäe attempted to capture the core of phenomena and effortlessly positioned the people he met on the journeys in a broad and general cultural context without them being aware of this. He dissected his own activities as a collector with a similar universality. However, because of WWII and the post-war repressions in Soviet Estonia, his activities were put on hiatus, a situa tion that would last for nearly twenty years. In 1957, after his imprisonment and years spent in Siberia, Põldmäe was allowed to return to his favourite activity in his home village in Rae Municipality, Harju County. Now his mode of expression strikes the reader as more contemplative and somewhat cautious, yet he also focuses on describing the informants with an extreme thoroughness, providing an extraordinarily well-informed and synthesising overview of the then cultural milieu of his home region. He interviewed his rel atives again, and for the first time he recorded the voice of his mother, whose rich knowledge of folklore he had written down on earlier occa sions, after all, it had been his father’s farm that was the starting point of his first expedition. He is no longer the valiant fellow he used to be, yet not worn and weary either. Returning to his beginnings, he recalls his first collecting trip and remarks that “the times have changed con siderably, and one has changed with them, so that the preconditions
for work are not the same as they used to be”. Even today, nearly a century later, Rudolf Põldmäes texts have an aura of bravery and power to them, testifying to a restless and seeking spirit and a contagious desire to go on. The diaries form a particularly compelling combination with the collected lore. In the book, diary texts are interspersed with typical folklore samples of the collected material. Põldmäes particular contribution as an outstanding folklore collector consists in the fact that he not only brought in the harvest, but also took the trouble to delve deeper, perpetuating in writing a part of the “fertile soil” from which the folklore plants would grow. |
