•281 · Додатки SUMMARY Судьбы историков и судьба исторического познания Zhurba Oleg, Lytvynova Tatyana The structure, problems, content and features of the collective monograph are presented. The focus is on the problems of interaction between the fate of historians and the fate of historical science. It is stated that under the influence of rapidly changing social, informational, cultural practices and the global challenges of the new millennium, the images of history as a sphere ofprofessional activity are rapidly becoming more complex. This poses the problem of choosing a professional, ideological, ethical choice for historians. On the pages of the monograph, the questions of the historian's interaction with the socio-political and cultural environment as a factor of professional activity are considered. The authors touch upon the problems of self-determination of historians in their guild space, as well as the ways and mechanisms of possible responses to the challenges of historiographic time and socio-political situation. Of significant interest is the memoir section, in which the problems posed find an emotional reflection, thus forming the source potential of the problems under consideration. German historians in the XIX century Bydgoszcz Grysińska-Jarmuła Katarzyna In 19th century Bydgoszcz was dominated by German society. The Germans were setting the tone for political, economic and cultural life. The city did not have a University (the authorities did not allow it to be founded), therefore the social scientific life began to focus around institutions and
scientific societies established in the middle nineteenth century. In 1880 Historical Society were founded. An important role among the initiators and members of these institutions was played by teachers (and earlier graduates) the Royal High School (founded in 1817). From this environment came a group of historians which started to learn the history of Bydgoszcz. They became interested in sources in the local archives, made numerous researches and prepared many studies about the history of Bydgoszcz (from the founding of the city to the present time). Although it was a time of intensified Germanization policy, and one of the goals ofscientific studies supported by the state was to prove the Germanness of these lands, nevertheless the resulting historical studies have their scientific value, although they are not free of errors. German historians such as L. Kühnast, E. Schmidt, and E Koch with their works are part of the historiographical history of the city. Humanities in the «war of cultures»: The organization of propaganda in Great Britain, Germany and Russia during the world war I Kotova Sabina, Stelmakh Sergiy The article examines issues the organization of propaganda in the UK, Germany and Russia during the First World I (1914-1918). The authors investigate the activities of censorship departments, the creation of special bodies for controlling the press, various bodiesfor conducting propaganda outside and within countries, government and public institutions to attract humanistic scientists from warring countries to propaganda. It has been concluded that different levels of propaganda organization in Great Britain, Germany and Russia, the importance of media resources in society and their influence in the enlightened environment have also determined the different degree of involvement of humanitarian scholars in propaganda actions. «Kharkiv in the mirror of world literature»: the historian's view Posokhov Sergiy The author proceeded from the fact that certain images of the city are not only conditioned by the historical and culturalfeatures of a particular settlement, as well as
comparisons with other cities and certain social sentiments, but may also depend on the influence of the literary tradition. This is especially the case when certain characteristics have been expressed by eminent writers whose authority is beyond doubt. The author attempts to analyze references to the city of Kharkiv in literary papers. For this purpose, the anthology "Kharkiv in the Mirror of World Literature" (Kharkiv, 2007) was used to present fragments of literary works by ДОЛЯ ІСТОРИЧНОГО ПІЗНАННЯ ТА ДОЛІ ІСТОРИКІВ
•283* Додатки famous writers and cultural figures containing references to the city of Kharkiv, people and events directly or indirectly related to the city. In total in the anthology there are excerptsfrom 311 works of 127 authors. The purpose of the study was to identify and explain more or less stable characteristics thatform certain images of the city. As a result, the author states that the anthologies presented in the works contain references to the city of Kharkiv, which mostly represent the «outside view». Kharkiv primarily appears as a transit city. The characters of many literary works are only occasionally related to Kharkiv. Not surprisingly, their ratings and opinions are driven by comparisons with other cities, inspired by the specifics of the trip and the particular situation. There are not many sketches in these works that could be called an attempt to discover and comprehend the image of the city. However, the existing mentions capture the understanding of Kharkiv’s authors as a significant transport, industrial, administrative center, as a university city. Of course, in Soviet times, writers often described Kharkiv as a revolutionary center. At the same time, Kharkiv's claims for some special role were perceived by the authors, apparently skeptically. As for monuments or at least landmark buildings, as well as references to historical figures in literary works, this list looks rather colorful. Obviously, the authors did not want to go deeper into the history of the city, they were guided by some other motives. However, some characteristics and ratings have
proven to be stable and continue to be used today in journalism. Scholar as a saint: The making of the academic cult of Aleksey Shakhmatov Aristov Vadym The article is about the cult ofAleksey Shakhmatov (1864-1920} which emerged in the Soviet scholarship during the 1920-1940s. Shakhmatov was a Russian philologist whose works had decisive effect on the studies on the Old Ruthenian chronicles. He was respected by his colleagues and gained authority among the young researchers who later developed his ideas and used his methods. After the scholar's death, these respect and authority made for the beginning of Shakhmatov's veneration in the academic circles. This process is considered in the article as a formation of the cult of a saint. The tradition of Shakhmatov's veneration influenced on the reception and wide recognition of his hypotheses and methodology in the scholarship of the 20th - early 21st century. From the mid-1930s on, when the Soviet sciences searched for their «national roots», a new image ofShakhmatov emerged as a founder of the «chronicle studies». At that time, his research practice [«Shakhmatov's method») and his hypotheses about the history of early chronicles («Shakhmatov’s scheme») were put in order. Shakhmatov's works were canonized in the discipline. Emotional self-presentation In autobiographical texts of nineteenth-century historians Kiselyova Yuliya The article explores the «emotional intentionality)» of autobiographies by nineteenth-century historians (Μ. P. Dragomanov, Μ. I. Kostomarov, S. Μ. Solovyov), as conscious construction of the emotional dimension of autobiography, based on emotives and emotional characterizations. The author argues that the emotional selfpresentation of historians is connected directly with the ethical beliefs of memoirists. «Emotional intentionality)» not only gave them confidence in their value judgments, but also became a language which formed, represented, andfixed certain universal moral precepts and professional virtues. Denis Zubritsky - a conservative historian against the life and historiographic «challenges» of the modern era Kutsyi Ivan The article explores the role of Denis Zubritsky in the Ukrainian historiographic process of the XIX century. The question of the insufficient knowledge and spopularization of this figure in Ukrainian science, as well as the prevalence of stereotypical assessments
and judging labels regarding it, has been clarified. The attention is focused on the aristocratic origin of the scientist, which determined his ideological, socio-political and scientific beliefs. The features of the combination of conservative and modern elements in his worldview are revealed. The contribution ofD. The contribution of this researcher to the development of Ukrainian archeography and special historical disciplines is determined. The problem of the place and role of the history in the social life in Ludwik Kubala's scientific heritage Pestrykova Oksana This scientific paper is devoted to the analysis and generalization of Ludwig Kubala's views on the problem of place, role and functions of the historical science. The place of the historian's representations was determined in general context of the development of Polish historical science of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Also the place of the scientific heritage of the researcher was established among the main directions of the Polish historical writing of the 19th and early 20th centuries. In this article L. Kubala's arguments about the sense of historical study, its functions, source base were presented. Also in this article an attempt was made to present the peculiarities of Polish historian style and to show examples of the characteristic literary-stylistic techniques. Conclusions about the influence ofL. Kubala's studies on the process offormation of the Cossack-Polish confrontation image in the Polish public opinion of the first half of the 20th century
were presented. The historian at the turn of the era: Julian Tselevich (1843-1892) and his heritage Zashkil'njak Leonid The essay analyzes the life and scientific activity of Ukrainian Galician historian Julian Tselevich (1843-1892), who in the second half of the nineteenth century effectively influenced the formation of modern Ukrainian historiography, which was to solve, on a new methodological basis, the problem of constructing the national history of Ukrainians as an individual people. •286· Додатки family of Greek Catholic priests and, from an early age, experienced discrimination on a national basis in Habsburg conditions, where Austrian and Polish officials exercised power over the majority of the Ruthenium-Ukrainian population. In an effort to protect and consolidate the dignity of his people, Yu. Tselevich achieved a good historical education at Western universities and throughout his subsequent life actively worked in the camp of Galician populists («narodovcy») who worked on the development and propagation of the Ukrainian idea in Galicia and other empires, where the Ukrainian population lived. Active public work distracted him from scientific activity. However, he never left it, working with documents on the study of issues of the early history of the Slavs, the past of Galicia, popular movements (opryshky, Cossacks), church institutions. His historical work did not become a turning pointfor the development of national historiography, but significantly influenced the formation of a common image of Ukraine’s past, as well as the consolidation of the national consciousness of Ukrainians of Galicia in the period when the national movements of the enslaved peoples of Central and Eastern Europe were entering into the international arena. In the vice of the soviet paradigm: landowners in researches of a. Μ. Anfimov Temirova Nadiia The present paper aims to highlight the significant aspects of a prominent Soviet agrarian historian Andrew An ifimov's research. The turmoil of the twentieth century shaped the researcher's life, embodied in dispossession,
restrictions on civil rights, war, persecution for the critical views. Anfimov's academic pursuit serves as a vivid instance of a historian's fate in a totalitarian state. A special role in his research activity, which began on the eve of the «thaw» period, was preoccupied by the landlord economy, in respect of which he studied a wide range of issues, namely: the social nature of the landlord ownership, the material and production base of the landlord economy, land tenure, land use and the organization of the landlord economy, trade and industrial activity, loans etc. Andrew Anfimov came to the conclusion about the predominance of the skills-training system until 1917, which transformed the landed estates into semi-feudal. At the same time, he singled out the regions where the capitalist system dominated: the Right Bank and South Ukraine, the Baltic states and South Russia. Under the pressure from the political establishment in the 1970s the historian wasforced to give up his own beliefs about the backwardness of landlords'farms and the impossibility of leading a «socialist» ДОЛЯ ІСТОРИЧНОГО ПІЗНАННЯ ТА ДОЛІ ІСТОРИКІВ

The original hypotheses about the «Igor' tale» As the form of a «betrayal» to research priorities (A. Zimin, B. Gasparov, E. Keenan, A. Zaliznyak) Vynogradov Gennadiiy The article is devoted to a critical consideration of the four concepts concerning «The Igor’ Tale» (further - IT), represented in the time between the beginning of the 60s oftheXX-th century. (A. Zimin) to the beginning of the XXI-th century. (E. Keenan and A. Zaliznyak; I-st edition ofB. Gasparov's work was published in 1984). In addition, these authors have different professional and theoretical-methodological guidelines (A. Zimin and E. Keenan are historians, B. Gasparov and A. Zaliznyak are linguists), use their creative ambitions regarding IT in different historical and governmental conditions (Zimin in the Soviet Union during the so-called «Khruchov thaw", Keenan is in the United States, Gasparov - in exile, his book was printed in Vienna, Zaliznyak - in the modern Russian Federation ), but their choice as the main defendants, this research was dictated the following circumstance: nominated them more-or-less original hypotheses concerning IT went beyond the leading scientific interests of authors, but the high level ofcraftsmanship of each corresponding scientific degrees and honored the authority had a priori guarantee a high grade of each of the analysis of the proposed travel. The positions ofA. Zimin and E. Keenan combined emphasis on
the idea that IT is the pastiche of the end of the XVIII-th century and around this idea focused logical, historical, linguistic, and other arguments. According to Zimin, the author of IT was Yaroslav Archimandrite Joil Bykovsky, in handwritten form in the collection which was discovered the text of IT, Keenan - famous Czech linguist JosefDobrovsky; each of these authors had sufficient professional training to create a spectacular intellectual mistifikaciû. •288· Додатки Historiographical myth about Alexander Pol Zaruba Viktor The mechanisms offormation in the regional historiographical and cultural space of the myth about the exclusive role of the local landowner Alexander Paul in the economic, cultural, scientific, social life ofKaterynoslav and Southern Ukraine in general are revealed. The main reasons for the creation of the cult of person ality ofO. Paul are identified, the main periods of study and instrumentalization of this person are identified, their main features. The works of historians, writers, publicists, who formed the basic parameters of the mythologizing ofAlexander Paul as an exceptional character in the history ofKaterynoslav and all of Ukraine in the second half of the XIX century. 0. Polya's case is considered not only in the context of regional history and historiography, but also as a disturbing symptom of corrosion of professional historical knowledge, as an example of using history to realize public, political, group interests, to construct relevant historical memory. The author argues that the instrumentalization of history has become a dominant feature of the historical culture of the region, where the main cre ators of historical myths are professional historians. At the end of the XIX century. Through the efforts ofD. Yavornytsky and A. Synyavsky, realizing the need to create a pantheon of local heroes, 0. Paul was presented to the public as an exceptional person. This relay race in the same style is continued by certified historians of the early XXI century. In such representations 0. Paul is
considered uncritically and outside the historical context. There are well-founded concerns about the dominance ofsuch approaches in historical science and its interaction with the public sphere. The importance of adhering to basic professional ethics is emphasized. Borshchevsky) Stetskevych Vitalii Professor Vitaliy Stetskevych recalls his meetings and communication with one of the founders of the Faculty of History of Dnipropetrovsk State University, Professor Valentyn Borshchevsky (1910-1989). The focus of the memoirs was the ways ofprofessional development of the young scientist and the support of his efforts by an experienced colleague. A description of the scientific, educational and social situation at the Faculty of History and Philology of the late 1960s- early 1970s. Y. D. Margolis is more than a historian (from materials on the history of the Department of Historiography and Source Studies Dnepropetrovsk State University) Zhurba Oleg, Chernov Evgeniy The text is a complex structure. It consists of a recorded interview with the department lecturer Evgeny Chernov and the publication offragments from his home archive, which are dedicated to the professor ofLeningrad State University Yuri Margolis (1930-1996). Our work was written for the 90th anniversary of the scientist and was to be published in the anniversary collection, for which this publication was being prepared. The focus is on scientific and organizational ties between metropolitan and provincial universities (conducting archival practices, exchanging literature, scientific conferences, writing reviews on dissertations), as well as personal contacts between scientists in the late
