Zusammenfassung:Except for two moments, when he enjoyed outstanding fame, Bernardino Luini was long overshadowed by the great Leonardo da Vinci. Contrasting mere talent with genius, critics dismissed Luini's imitation of Leonardo as mindless and repetitive. But the actual relationship between the two artists was more complicated. Though never Leonardo's pupil, Luini became increasingly absorbed in an effort to turn the older master's complex and difficult art into a widely popular idiom. Above all, Luini exploited the potential of his Leonardo models in creating a new type of devotional image that directly addressed the viewer. To Leonardo's influence, then, was added that of Andrea Solario, making Luini the leading Lombard painter of the time. Beautiful and moving, his vast production of frescos and endlessly copied oil paintings continues to find admirers to the present day. -- Page 4 of cover
