Zusammenfassung: | In this book, Alessandro Sebastiani examines how architecture and urbanism can be used to construct national identity. Using Rome as his case study, he explores how the city was transformed to accommodate different political ideologies in the period from 1870 to the end of World War II. After unification, Rome's classical architecture served as a reference point, guiding transformations of the urban fabric that met contemporary needs but also supported the agenda of the newly-formed Italian state. The advent of fascist state in the 1920s ushered in a different order of ideological placemaking. The monuments of ancient Roman were isolated in order to enhance their structural elegance, a scheme that powerfully conveyed political messages in support of Mussolini's regime. Sebastiani's volume offers a new approach to understanding the sophisticated relationships between archeology, urban planning, and politics within the city of Rome. Moreover, it highlights the consequences of suppressing historical evidence from monuments and archaeological sites |

Moreover, it highlights the consequences of suppressing historical evidence from monuments and archaeological sites Geschichte 1870-1945 gnd rswk-swf City planning / Italy / Rome / History / 19th century City planning / Italy / Rome / History / 20th century Politik (DE-588)4046514-7 gnd rswk-swf Denkmal (DE-588)4011453-3 gnd rswk-swf Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 gnd rswk-swf Städtebau (DE-588)4056795-3 gnd rswk-swf Nationalbewusstsein (DE-588)4041282-9 gnd rswk-swf Antike (DE-588)4068754-5 gnd rswk-swf Kunst (DE-588)4114333-4 gnd rswk-swf Architektur (DE-588)4002851-3 gnd rswk-swf Rome (Italy) / History / 1870-1945 Rome (Italy) / Buildings, structures, etc / History Rome (Italy) / Politics and government / 1870-1945 Rome (Italy) / Antiquities Italy / Antiquities, Roman Rom (DE-588)4050471-2 gnd rswk-swf Italien (DE-588)4027833-5 gnd rswk-swf Rom (DE-588)4050471-2 g Denkmal (DE-588)4011453-3 s Antike (DE-588)4068754-5 s Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 s Geschichte 1870-1945 z DE-604 Städtebau (DE-588)4056795-3 s Architektur (DE-588)4002851-3 s Nationalbewusstsein (DE-588)4041282-9 s Italien (DE-588)4027833-5 g Kunst (DE-588)4114333-4 s Politik (DE-588)4046514-7 s Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-1-009-35413-4 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-1-009-35410-3 https://doi.org/10.1017/9781009354127 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
