Adopting Patricia Hill Collins Controlling Images as essential to the representation of Black womens lives within the media, Hero Me Not juxtaposes Storm to Collins images of the mammy and jezebel, expanding this analysis to include the creation of a new stereotype that Burke coins Negro Spiritual Woman.Using personal anecdotes, pop culture and social and cultural references, each chapter focuses on the history, and different incarnations of Storms comic and film development over the years while integrating contemporary racial politics to hold space for Black female voices that have heretofore been silenced by the creation of a powerful Black woman who only uses her power in support of whiteness. |
