Zusammenfassung:This article deals with the art historian August Schmarsow and his theory of architectural space formation. It is explained, in which way this theory contains a connection of space formation – understood as the essential dimension of architectural creativity – with a speci c moment of the purposive nature of this creativity: that of the private appropriation and use of space. is link is evident in Schmarsow’s reference to the dwelling as the origin of architecture as a space-creating art and is based on his tracing of the phenomenon of space formation back to the fundamental spatial constitution of man, his corresponding visual-corporeal perception of, as well as orientation and movement in, space. In addition to explaining this dimension of Schmarsow’s architectural theory, which has not been addressed until this day, this link is placed in the context of the architectural discourse of the early 20th century and, nally, interpreted as an implicit contribution to more closely de ne the relative autonomy of architectural design – a closer de nition that is linked to the overcoming of a primarily object-oriented architectural aesthetics.
