Bibliography 171 Index 183
Between 1900 and 1970, the United States, the Soviet Union, and several European countries saw the publication of many remarkable industrial or factory novels, based on empirical observations and sometimes even statistical sources. With two successive world wars and the rise of communism and fascism, this was a very turbulent time in the history of industrial capitalism. In addition, Taylorism and Fordism aimed at increasing production and consumption. These developments form the background of the writing of these modernist industrial novels, which addressed such themes as class conflict, bad working conditions, worker alienation, changing workmen’s and employee cultures, urbanization, and worker miaration. The orimarv goal of these novels was to document and make public factual developments in the working conditions in factories and offices, often with the intention to influence company welfare work and state social policies. This book focuses on modernist industrial novels written in five big industrial nations: pre-World War II United States, Stalinist Soviet-Union, Weimar Germany, post-World War II Italy and France. |
