Sir, It was very much my wish and intention to have returned my personal thanks to every member of the corporation, for the very great obligation lately conferred on me, by electing me to the office of Principal land coal-meter of this city. But having been hitherto prevented by a severe cold and indisposition, I entreat your permission to convey, in this manner, my most grateful acknowledgements for the same. I can assure you, that I am deeply impressed with the many distinguished instances of friendship and kindness which i have experienced on this occasion;- and have the heartfelt satisfaction to observe, from the unanimous support of the Court of Common Council, that my conduct, during the many years I had the honor of being a member of it, has obtained me the approbation and esteem of my fellow citizens:
