TESOŁ International Association has defined a core set of principies for the exemplary teaching and learning of English as a new language. This new addition to the best-selling series applies these principles to young learners in global contexts who are learning English as an additional language. The 6 Principles and their recommended practices are targets of teaching excellence that provide teachers with the knowledge to improve instruction and assessment Instructional techniques are illustrated with classroom examples and vignettes. Chapter 4 presents four real-life case studies in which teachers carry out The 6 Principles in innovative ways in young learner classrooms around the world. The book will help educators • respect, affirm, and promote students’ home languages and cultural knowledge and experience as resources; • understand about developmentally appropriate approaches for teaching school-aged children at preprimary and primary school levels; • optimize the classroom environment for young English learners by providing several high-leverage practices that are evidence based and add depth and clarity to what each principle means; and • teach English to young learners in the 21st century by providing innovative global teaching practices for promoting children’s well-being, creating spaces for real communication in English across cultures, and engaging children in multiliteracies. NEW FEATURES! Professional development tools and features such as The б Principles Checklist for TEYL is included in the book and for download. Also included for the first time are a series
of prereading and postreading reflection questions at the beginning and end of each chapter.
