Zusammenfassung:"In A’in (Ethos), Iranian intellectual Ahmad Kasravi issues a stinging double-pronged critique of ‘religious’ traditionalist as well as ‘secular’ Eurocentric attitudes to Iranian identity and the vexed question of modernity in the first half of the 20th century. Anticipating and influencing the works of thinkers such as Fakhruddin Shadman, Ihsan Naraqi, ‘Ali Shari‘ati and alal Al-e Ahmad’s famous concept of gharbzadagi (Westoxication), Kasravi, writing in 1932, argues in a series of short treatises for a version of Iranian modernity that synthesizes Europe’s technological advancements and the perceived wisdom of its own heritage (encouraging virtue, righteousness, communal co-existence, benevolence, chastity, selflessness, contentment, and honour). Kasravi’s synthesis of traditionalist and modernist critiques is typical of an Iranian discursive tradition that would contribute to the debates which would culminate in the Islamic Revolution of 1979. This first English translation of Ethos makes this important text available to scholars and students of Middle Eastern studies as well as postcolonial studies more widely."
