Zusammenfassung: | "This book analyzes violence involving Catholics in the nineteenth-century world - revealing the motives for violence, showing the link between religious and secular grievances, and illuminating Catholic pluralism. Catholics and Violence in the Nineteenth-Century Global World is the first study to systematically analyze the link between faith and violent action in modern history. Focusing on incidents involving members of the Roman Catholic Church across the globe, the book offers a kaleidoscopic overview of situations in which physical or symbolic violence attended inner-Catholic, Catholic-secular, and interreligious conflicts. Focusing especially on the role of agency, the authors explore the motives behind, perceptions of, and legitimation strategies for religion-related violence, as well as evaluating debates about conflict and discussing the role of religious leadership in violent incidents. Additionally, they illuminate the complex ways in which religious grievances interacted with secular differences and highlight the plurality of Catholic standpoints. In doing so, the book brings to light the variety of ways in which religion and violence have interacted historically. Showing that the link between faith and violence was more nuanced than theoreticians of 'religious violence' suggest, the book will appeal to historians, social scientists, and religious scholars"-- |

Bouwers "This book analyzes violence involving Catholics in the nineteenth-century world - revealing the motives for violence, showing the link between religious and secular grievances, and illuminating Catholic pluralism. Showing that the link between faith and violence was more nuanced than theoreticians of 'religious violence' suggest, the book will appeal to historians, social scientists, and religious scholars"-- Geschichte 1790-1900 gnd rswk-swf Katholizismus (DE-588)4030027-4 gnd rswk-swf Katholik (DE-588)4163454-8 gnd rswk-swf Widerstand (DE-588)4079262-6 gnd rswk-swf Gewalt (DE-588)4020832-1 gnd rswk-swf Protest (DE-588)4157835-1 gnd rswk-swf Violence / Religious aspects / Catholic Church Anti-Catholicism / History / 19th century Imperialism / Religious aspects / Catholic Church Church and state / Catholic Church Catholic Church / History / 19th century Catholic Church Anti-Catholicism 1800-1899 History (DE-588)4143413-4 Aufsatzsammlung gnd-content Katholik (DE-588)4163454-8 s Katholizismus (DE-588)4030027-4 s Gewalt (DE-588)4020832-1 s Protest (DE-588)4157835-1 s Widerstand (DE-588)4079262-6 s Geschichte 1790-1900 z DE-604 Bouwers, Eveline G. 1981- (DE-588)1015752829 edt Äquivalent Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-0-367-65104-6 Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe 9781003127857 Digitalisierung BSB München - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=034326281&sequence=000001&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis |
