FURY FROM THE NORTH 6. Wearable emergency supply pack- designed to sustain an aircraft crew member and signal his/her location after an emergency landing. Chapter 6 1. 2. 3. 4. Anton Moseyev, the technician responsible for the Su-25 Bort Number 51, painted a big heart in red on the cover of the drop tank of his jet. For this purpose, he borrowed the paint from his colleague, Andrey Bolyukh, intending to actually paint a cartoon ‘ace of diamonds’. However, after the shoot down of the Bort Number 27, he stopped, and his artwork remained incomplete. Islamic Party of Afghanistan. Notably, the mass of Afghan Mujahedeen was actually organised into seven different political parties, six of which (bar the one commanded by Ahmad Shah Massoud) were supported by the Afghan Bureau of the Inter Service Intelligence ( ISI) of Pakistan, on behalf of the presidency of that country. As the sole body in control of the distribution of the international aid provided from all over the World (especially by the USA and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), the ISI was capable of exercising at least indirect control over the activity and major operations of the military wings of the parties it was supporting. 100kg bombs on multi-point ejector racks. As mentioned above, the 378th OShAP was also equipped with L-39s training jets. However, these were never deployed in combat: these jets made in Czechoslovakia were used as weather scouts, radio relays, or to familiarise new pilots with the territory ofoperations: at least as often, they were used to provide refresher training after a leave or
hospitalisation and this included live firing exercises on the firing ranges. For this purpose, L-39s could be armed with UB-16-57 pods or FAB-100bombs. 5. The 70th Brigade was deployed in the Helmland and Kandahar provinces of eastern Afghanistan and thus close to the border to Pakistan, where it saw intensive operations against the Mujahedeen. The unit was decorated with the Orders of Kutuzov and Boghdan Khmelnitsky twice. 6. Caravans would stop there to water their camels after a long crossing of the Registan Desert. 7. 1 Company of the 334th Detached Special Forces of the 15th Detached Brigade of the Special Forces of the GRU. 8. Kovalev Nikolai Ivanovich, Lieutenant Colonel, commander of a squadron of 181 Air Force ops of 40th Army, was killed on 1 June 1985. By the Decree of the USSR Supreme Soviet of 5 February 1986 he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union (posthumously). 9. Soap Hill 10. The aircraft hitching hook was used with the PTK-25 and the connecting link with PTK-25C as it allowed connection of two canopies. 11. For example, the Sukhoi Design Bureau’s Vityaz and Ulan-Ude Aviation Factory’s logos. 12. In September 1941 the title ‘Guards unit’ was introduced in the Red Army. The title ‘Guards’ was assigned to military units, ships, formations and associations of the Soviet Armed Forces that had distinguished themselves in combat during the Great Patriotic War. The military formation received the Guards banner and personnel received the Guards title and badge. In the post-war period, the title of ‘Guards’ was transferred as part of continuity to
preserve the combat traditions of the units distinguished in the Great Patriotic War.
