Summary 145 Summary The monograph Gender Revisions is a study of socio-historical transforma tions of the image and identities of women in an era marked by the rise of the post-national state. The post-national state - due to various factors, extend ing from globalisation to feminisation of migrations and the weaker role of the social state - abandons the modern “gender contract” of the nation state. It introduces new models of social reproduction that replace it, often closely dependent on a foreign female labour force - from global housekeepers that bring ethnic and cultural diversity into the national spaces of host countries and are involved in reproduction, and are called transnational. Simultaneously, the cultural identities of local populations are becoming pluralised. The im pacts of globalisation and the transition to a neoliberal economy create new spaces for identity self-determination and understanding of community iden tity. Women, until recently the reproducers of the modern nation, are increas ingly turning into ethnically and culturally heterogeneous subjects of a post national collective in the midst of the simultaneous forces of globalisation and the neoliberal transformation of society. The present study discusses the transition from the national to post-national society in the context of post-socialist Slovenia. This is based on the obser vation that everywhere in the European post-socialist societies the gender identity of women has become a relevant tool in the ideology of the historical “normalisation” of society in the wake of the collapse of
communism. While the majority of critical Western literature is focused on the impact of this transition on the lives of women in the post-socialist period and aimed at
146 Ksenija Vidmar Horvat: Revizije spola studying the narrative of “adapting” and “rebuilding”, the present monograph aims to raise the issue of the relevance of pluralising and the cultural hetero geneity of womens communities in the formation of the post-national state. How open (or closed) is the entry to (post-)national imagining for these new, diverse and identity-inconsistent collective subjects that are united only by the notion of a common, single gender, while everything else is left to the contin gencies of other affiliations? At what point of symbolic and cultural entry into the (post-)national collective can they participate in the drawing up of a post national gender contract? The answers are sought through analysing the im ages that are mainly determined by the public spaces that give them the place of the Other. The aim is to create a cacophony of images that are supposed to destabilise the project of a “gendered nation”, in both its revisionist and ethno nationalist campaigns.
