ABSTRACT Romania has a larger Gypsy population than most other countries but little is known about the relationship between this group and the non-Gypsy Romani ans around them. This book focuses on a group of Roma (Roma Gypsies) living in a village in Transylvania and explores their social life and cosmology. As the Roma depend on, and define themselves in relation to, the surrounding non-Gypsy populations, understanding their day-to-day interactions with these neighbors, primarily peasants to whom they relate through extended barter, is essential. The author concludes that, although economically and politically marginal, the Roma are central to Romanian collective identity because they offer both desirable and repulsive counter-images, incorporating the uncivilized, immoral and attractive “other”. While creating tensions, this interdependence also allows for some degree of cultural and political autonomy for the Roma within the Romanian society. 215
REZUMAT România are una dintre cele mai numeroase populații de romi, însă se cunosc puține despre relația dintre aceștia și românii în mijlocul cărora trăiesc. Cartea de față are ca subiect un grup de romi care trăiesc într-un sat din Transilvania și se dorește o explorare a vieții sociale și a cosmologiei acestora. Dat fiind că romii depind de populațiile nerome din jurul lor și se definesc în relație cu acestea, o înțelegere a interacțiunilor de zi cu zi cu vecinii lor, în principal țărani cu care au raporturi extinse de troc, este esențială. Concluzia autoarei este că, deși margi nali din punct de vedere politic și economic, romii joacă un rol central în definirea identității colective românești pentru că oferă contraimagini, și dezirabile, și in dezirabile, întruchipând astfel alteritatea necivilizată, imorală și atrăgătoare. Deși generatoare de tensiuni, interdependența dintre cele două grupuri lasă loc unui grad de autonomie culturală și politică a romilor în cadrul societății românești. 216

ABSTRACT Romania has a larger Gypsy population than most other countries but little is known about the relationship between this group and the non-Gypsy Romani ans around them. This book focuses on a group of Roma (Roma Gypsies) living in a village in Transylvania and explores their social life and cosmology. As the Roma depend on, and define themselves in relation to, the surrounding non-Gypsy populations, understanding their day-to-day interactions with these neighbors, primarily peasants to whom they relate through extended barter, is essential. The author concludes that, although economically and politically marginal, the Roma are central to Romanian collective identity because they offer both desirable and repulsive counter-images, incorporating the uncivilized, immoral and attractive “other”. While creating tensions, this interdependence also allows for some degree of cultural and political autonomy for the Roma within the Romanian society. 215
REZUMAT România are una dintre cele mai numeroase populații de romi, însă se cunosc puține despre relația dintre aceștia și românii în mijlocul cărora trăiesc. Cartea de față are ca subiect un grup de romi care trăiesc într-un sat din Transilvania și se dorește o explorare a vieții sociale și a cosmologiei acestora. Dat fiind că romii depind de populațiile nerome din jurul lor și se definesc în relație cu acestea, o înțelegere a interacțiunilor de zi cu zi cu vecinii lor, în principal țărani cu care au raporturi extinse de troc, este esențială. Concluzia autoarei este că, deși margi nali din punct de vedere politic și economic, romii joacă un rol central în definirea identității colective românești pentru că oferă contraimagini, și dezirabile, și in dezirabile, întruchipând astfel alteritatea necivilizată, imorală și atrăgătoare. Deși generatoare de tensiuni, interdependența dintre cele două grupuri lasă loc unui grad de autonomie culturală și politică a romilor în cadrul societății românești. 216
