Handbook on THE SCIENCE OF EARLY LITERACY edited by Sonia Q. Cabell Susan B. Neuman Nicole Patton Terry Foreword by David K. Dickinson Bridging preschool and the primary grades, this hand book presents the best current knowledge about early literacy development and instruction. The editors and contributors are experts in the field who clarify what the science shows to be most effective across multi ple dimensions of young children’s literacy growth. With a focus on equity, the volume provides a broad, deep, and nuanced understanding of the connections among reading, writing, and oral language, and ex amines ways to put all children on a path to success. In 33 chapters, the Handbook offers interdisciplinary perspectives on six key domains. Sections cover con ceptual foundations of early literacy; development and instruction of both code- and meaning-related literacy skills; enhancing professional development and fami ly engagement; supporting equity across populations; and learning across boundaries, including digital and out-of-school contexts. Findings on neurobiological, environmental, and instructional influences on literacy development are translated into clear recommendations for practice. Chapters discuss what works in supporting young children’s alphabet knowledge, spelling, writing, oral language, and comprehension skills. Strategies for data-based decision making and intervention within multi-tiered systems of support are addressed. The vol ume highlights ways to increase access to high-quality learning, in particular, for children growing up İn pov erty and
low-income households, children in racial and ethnic minority groups, dual language and multilingual learners, and students with disabilities. Providing cutting-edge perspectives on core issues, this book will guide and inform teacher educators, graduate students, and researchers in literacy, early childhood education, special education, child devel-
opment, and educational psychology. It is valuable reading for literacy specialists and school leaders in PreK-2, as well as policymakers focusing on early literacy, and will as a supplemental text in graduate-level courses.
