Zusammenfassung:"During the Umayyad period (92/711-422/1031), the Christian - and Roman cultural heritage - population of the Visigothic kingdom was transformed into an Andalusi society with a new identity framework that integrated it into the medieval Arab-Muslim world. Within this world, al-Andalus is one of the regions whose processes of Arabisation and Islamisation are known in greater detail, largely thanks to the interdisciplinary perspective consolidated in the last two decades. In fact, inertias are being shared between disciplines coming from very distant schools and paradigms - above all archeology, medievalism and Arabic studies -; combined with a growing specialisation in technical disciplines which, within the framework of the study of social processes, are helping to deepen historical interpretation.
This book is a collective reflection on the analysis categories and research methodologies that, in the first two decades of the 21st century, have contributed to the advancement of knowledge of the formative process of al-Andalus. This reflection is carried out by some of the leading figures in this renewal - archaeologists, medievalist historians and Arabic philologists-, who contribute their main findings on the processes of Arabisation and Islamisation. The book is divided into chapters grouped into three thematic sections, corresponding to the three main elements that stimulated the configuration of the new Andalusi society: the conquest of the Iberian Peninsula from 92/711 onwards; urban growth in the 3rd/9th century driven by the consolidation of the Umayyad administration; and the ideology that legitimised the organisation of the new society. In short, the book is a necessary reflection of the area of Andalusi studies on its origin, current state and most recent results, with the aim of problematising the directions to be taken from now on."
