Memory of the January Uprising in the interwar period Key words The January Uprising, veterans, Józef Pilsudski, historical memory, collective consciousness Abstract The identification of all generations with Polish history was an extremely im portant factor in the formation of national culture and the unification of the entire nation. The nationwide celebrations of the anniversary of the January Uprising, held annually under the auspices of the Polish President Ignacy Mościcki and Polish Marshal Józef Pilsudski (after his death this role was tak en over by Aleksandra Pilsudska), were an excellent tool to raise a generation in the spirit of patriotism. During the interwar period, veterans of 1863 par ticipated in all major patriotic celebrations as guests of honor. Today we can see in archival photographs from that period how they sit in the first rows on the honorary stands, watching military parades, and participate in pa triotic meetings organized for young people. The last celebrations with the participation of several January insurgents, took place in January 1939. The memory of the January Uprising was and is an element of collective memo ry. We can even say that it has transcended the lifetimes of the participants in the events and has become a generational memory. Summaries in English Abstract Józef Pilsudski’s interest in the January Uprising was the result of his fa thers involvement in independence activities and his mothers cultivating the tradition of the insurrection in the family home, as well as the fact that he himself had thoroughly studied the 1863 uprising. All of this resulted in the continuation of military efforts during the years of the Great War (First Cadre Company, Legions, Polish Military Organization — PMO) and the care and respect given to the January veterans after the Rebirth of Poland. The outline about 1863 by Józef Pilsudski was published several times. The first edition was illustrated with drawings by Henryk Minkiewicz and Ed ward Rydz, while subsequent editions were illustrated only by Rydz. It is an exemplary study of generational heritage and the continuation of the inde pendence ethos. Anna Pachowicz Selected aspects of support for the January Uprising (1863-1864) by res idents of the Tarnów area Key words The January Uprising, population of Tarnów area, history of the city, Tarnów, communication route of Galicia Abstract The purpose of the article is to show the attitude of the actions taken and the organization of the help that the participants of the January Uprising received from the residents of Tarnów and surrounding towns. Tarnów was in the territory of Austria as of 31st July 1772· The city, located on the then most important communication route in Galicia (the so-called Imperial Route, running from Bielsk in the direction of Wadowice, Boch nia, Tarnów, Przemysl to Lviv), relatively
quickly received information about events from the Russian and Prussian partitions. A similar situation occurred during the national uprisings. Interest in these events in Tarnów and surrounding towns was high. Residents were eager to get involved in helping those fighting, and were not discouraged by the difficulties and the awareness of the consequences in the event of arrest or search. Help included provision of weapons, dressing the wounded or joining units 458

They took part in battles of Chroberz on 17th of March 1863, and a day later, on 18th of March 18, at the battle of Grochowiska. Those willing to fight were not deterred by harsh consequences. In Tarnów and the surrounding area, the number of those arrested for participating in or helping the insurgents was increasing. From 1st of March to 31st of August 1864, The Martial Court in Tarnów conducted 546 investigations against 731 people, of which 438 were com pleted (against 541 people). Paweł Glugla Memory of the January Uprising in the Tarnów land. Celebrations of the 50th anniversary in the light of the local press from 1913 Key words The January Uprising, memory, anniversary celebrations, Tarnów land, press, 19th century, 20th century Abstract The text attempts to present ways of cultivating national memory on the example of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the January Uprising, with particular emphasis on the Tarnów land. The analysis uses one of the sources of the age, namely the local press. Despite the fact that no insurgent battles were recorded in Tarnów itself and its surroundings, many volunteer insurgents came from these areas. Some of them died while fighting for Po land’s freedom and independence. The wounded were brought to Tarnów, and those who were killed and died as a result of their wounds were buried. The insurgent burial mound from 1863, located in the Old Cemetery in
Tarnów, as well as individual graves of insurgents, testifies to the commit ment. The following elements were placed on the mound: The crest with eagle from the January Uprising period, Lithuanian Vytis and Archangel Mi chael. Many insurgents were sentenced to many years in prison, deportation to Siberia, confiscation of property. The memory of the heroes-survivors of this uprising, has survived to modern times (it has been cultivated since the 1860s). This is reflected in both, the material and spiritual spheres. Adam Buława Commanders of partisan military units in insurgent Płock province (1863-1864) Key words Commanders, partisan military units, the January Uprising, Płock province, commandants of the insurgent units, military art Abstract The article is devoted to a specific environment, namely the circle of com manders of armed units of the January Uprising, operating in the insurgent province of Plock (the Russian Plock Governorate) — Płock, Pułtusk, Os trołęka, Mława, Przasnysz and Lipno districts. The text analyzes the activities of commanders of insurgent units with a minimum of 100 men and partici pating in at least one independently conducted battle or skirmish (about 25). The paths of the careers of commanders, coming from different provincial groups (veterans of the November Uprising, emigrants and participants in the wars of 1831-1863, the Austrian army, the Prussian army, the tsarist army, civilians, foreigners) were examined, an attempt was made to analyze the art of war demonstrated in confrontation with the enemy by insurrec tionist commanders. They were divided in this regard into several categories (outstanding, the best and most efficient; those developing command skills or at an average level; unlucky ones who, due to unfavorable circumstances, were unable to demonstrate their skills; great expectations — great disappoint ments, incompetents). The consequences of their
participation in the upris ing are presented (battle death, imprisonment, death sentence for participa tion in the uprising, exile, post-insurrection emigration). 460

The verbal image of the enemy in updated Christmas carols created in relation to the Polish struggle for independence Key words Updated Christmas carols, Russians, Muscovites, tsar, „mochy” (diminutive from the polish word Muscovites (poi. Moskale) Abstract The basic musical pieces that accompanied people every year during the cel ebration of Christmas were carols and pastorals. In the nineteenth century, the creation of carols in the Polish language developed in two basic currents: strictly religious and national. A whole series of updated carols were created as part of the national current. Among other things, they were created during and in connection with the activities of national uprisings, (including the November and January Uprisings), struggles for independence and the shape of Poland’s borders. In updated carols, strictly religious and patriotic themes penetrated. There was a distinction of chronological boundaries. The creators combined biblical and Christmas reality with current characters and events. The main enemy of mankind in these songs was evil, as well as the direct enemy of the Polish population were the Russians. The article shows how Russians, Russia and the Tsar were presented in Polish updated carols written in relation to the November and January Uprisings and during the Great War. The status of the enemy and its presentation during the efforts to re gain Poland’s independence was not unchanged in updated carols. During
the Great War, resentment towards Russia gained additional strength, which can be seen, inter alia, in the dehumanization of the enemy by comparing him to flies that we squash and the use of words such as “Muscovites” and „mochy”. Summaries in English Abstract Colonel Walenty Lewandowski performed the function military and ci vilian head of the Podlasie province from 5th January to 24th March 1863. He was unfairly accused of lack of military experience, low efficiency and wrong decision made. According to some historians, the colonels plan in the spring of 1863, was to finally organize and train insurgents in the Łukowo area to transform the guerrilla into a regular war. Lewandowski was severely wounded in the Battle of Róża; he also survived the uprising and deportation to Siberia. As the conspirational head of the Kansky District, he took part in meetings of conspirators who wanted to separate Siberia from Russia. He was arrested, so he did not take part in the rebellion (which ended in repression). He returned to Poland in 1877. Iwona Stępień The myth of the January Uprising in the works of Stefan Żeromski Key words Myth, the January Uprising, grave, insurgent, battlefield, death, heroism, destruction, suffering Abstract Article topic shows the problem of the myth of the January Uprising in the Stefan Żeromski works (in particular, in the pieces Echoes of the Forest (poi. Echa leśne), Ravens and crows willpeck us to pieces (poi. Rozdziobią nas kruki, wrony...), Faithful river (pol. Wierna rzeka). The main motives, in the works of Żeromski, which are related to the myth of the uprising, are death of an insurgent, a grave, and a battlefield. The independence uprising is pre sented ambiguously, as the author showed the heroic attitudes of the heroes against the background of inhuman suffering and
destruction. On the one hand, Żeromski writes about fighting for the homeland and cultivates the memory of it, while on the other hand he raises questions about the sense of organizing uprisings in the face of an uneven fight against the enemy and the immaturity of peasants to take up the ideological challenge. At the same time, paradoxically, he believes that the defeat of the uprising was an attempt to restore the dignity of the Polish nation. 462

The fate of a young January insurgent based on the diary of Romuald Wilusz (1840-1922) Key words 19th century, Poles in the 19th century, January Uprising, youth in the Jan uary Uprising, the Battle of Miechów, the Battle of Rybnica, the Battle of Jurkowice Abstract The January Uprising was a great independence uprising, in which a signif icant role was played by patriotic young people, brought up in the spirit of the romantic fight for freedom. One of the participants in this uprising was Romuald Wilusz (1840-1922), 23 years old man, and a medical student at the Jagiellonian University. He came from village Błażkowa (brzostecki coun ty). Romuald fought in the Anastazy Władysław Mossakowski and Dionzy Czachowski units. He participated in many operations including the Battle of Miechów (17th February, 1863) and the Battle of Rybnica (20th October 1863). After the defeat in the Battle of Jurkowice (21st October) he was cap tured by the Russians. We can inspect Romuald Wilusz’s insurgent experi ences and reflections through his memoir Memories of the 1863 Uprising and captivity (poi. Wspomnienia z powstania 1863 r. i z niewolt)., which he wrote down on the 50th anniversary of the Uprising (December 1912). The memoir helps to understand the motivations of the young insurrectionists who re ported their readiness to fight in the Uprising, as well as their

Summaries in English Abstract Adam Chmielowski youth, later painter, art critic and theorist, Polish Fran ciscan friar, founder of the congregation of Albertines, and finally a saint of the Catholic Church, was a period of constant patriotic demonstrations by young people. After the closure of the Real Gymnasium in Warsaw (which operated in the stream of the real school), Chmielowski continued his studies at the Polytechnic Institute of Agriculture and Forestry in Puławy, where was just the same patriotic sentiment as in Warsaw. In response to the Central National Committees Manifesto (22ndJanuary 1863), Polish youths formed a „Puławiacy” unit and, under the command of 19-year-old Leon Frankowski, joined the Uprising. After several successes, the unit was broken up by Cos sacks in the Slupcza (village near Sandomierz), while its young commander was hanged in April 1863. The rest of the unit arrived to Holy Cross Mon astery, where they were received by Marian Langiewicz — then head of the armed forces of the Sandomierz province. The cavalrymen, who were lo cated near Grochowiska (to the east of Mielec), tried to cross the Vistula at the Jesuit Mouth (the confluence of the Vistula and the Dunajec), but they were captured by the Austrian. Most of the insurgents, among whom was Chmielowski, were located in the powerful fortress in the Ołomuniec (today this city is located in the eastern part of the Czech Republic), where they were kept under guard by Hungarian hussars. Novel Bobin by Tadeusz Konwicki in the perspective of memory studies Key words Tadeusz Konwicki, post-memory, the January Uprising, Vilnius region, my thologisation, memory of the lost homeland Abstract Tadeusz Konwicki s novel Bohiń is an example of a piece where the autobio graphical convention is used. As in many of his other works, the author plac es a literary alter ego in the plot, while creating the illusion of the truthfulness of the presented story. He creates the fate of his grandmother Konwicki, only later admitting to the reader the thoughtful mystification. Although it is a fictional literary picture of Vilnius region after the fall of the January Uprising, it shows the perspective of a generation born in the interwar period during the mourning after the dramatic defeat of the rebellion. In interviews, Konwicki points to his inspiration for the produced vision of his native re gion in the second half of the 19th century. This article presents the sources used by Konwicki, then analyzes the references to the January Uprising and shows the vision of Vilnius region from the perspective of memory studies, in particular using post-memory theory. Summaries in English Abstract Although the January Uprising never spread to the territories of the Austri an partition, the Poles living there had a significant share in the fate of the insurgents. Information in the literature shows that the two largest urban centers of Galicia, namely Cracow and Lviv, gave shelter to the participants of the uprising during the underground fighting. The same also happened in the villages, where troops were often separated and located in smaller groups on patriotic households. However, the attitude toward the Uprising was not obvious. The Uprising became the object of vigorous political and ideological disputes, which were most concerned with the competition between the Red and White parties and the various groups balancing between them. Signif icant questions were being asked about the goals of the actions taken. The White party feared that the Reds, by their behavior, would lead the national liberation uprising to turn into a social revolution. The Reds, on the other hand, accused the Whites of being passive and conservative, wanting to up hold the existing status quo, hurting the peasantry and poor landed gentry. These and other issues related to the complicated political situation in Galicia during the analyzed period are reflected in the literature of the time, includ ing the prose of Michal Bałucki, Józef Narzymski and, Jan Lam, whose novel A resident of the Kingdom ofPoland in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in Galicia (poi. Koroniarz w Galicji) formed the basis of the analysis. The purpose of the piece is to show how the
political and social discourse related to the January Uprising, as well as the hierarchically ordered social relations prevailing in Galicia, was reflected in literature. Kraj i Litwa pogrążyły się w żałobie narodowej Abstract The outbreak of the uprising of 1863 and the impressment constituted a turning point in the careers of Aleksander Wielkopolski and Grand Duke Konstantin. From that point on, each successive week of the uprising under mined the position of both politicians. The Alvensleben Convention con cluded by Russia and Prussia, contributed to undermining the role of the Refom party in Russia in favor of the party of the so-called “samobytnicy”, which advocated ending the policy of enlisting Poles and silencing the upris ing through drastic measures. Aleksander Wielkopolski was in a lost position from the very beginning. He had no followers in the Kingdom of Poland and was losing the support of the Grand Duke. The Duke, on the other hand, fought for several months to retain his position as Governor and to continue his project of autonomy of the Kingdom of Poland. Aleksander II has decid ed to end his brothers mission in Warsaw. His decision was influenced by the change in the international constellation, the breaking of the Franco-Russian Alliance and the rising wave of anti-Polish sentiment in Russia. The discussed works and objects of the artist Ludomir Benedyktowicz (1844-1926) can be viewed on permanent exhibition in the room of the January Uprising where is his prosthesis, and in the Przebendowski Palace (also known as Radziwiłów Palace) is an oil painting entitled Insurgent Driveway (poi. Podjazdpowstańców, Podjazdpow stańczy, Podjazd, Pikieta powstańców). Another work is a pen sketch made while the painter was imprisoned in the Citadel, entitled Girl with a metal jug (poi. Dziewczyna z konwią). The Museum also has a book written by him, published in Krakow, entitled Stanislaw Witkiewicz as a critic, his concepts, principles and theories in painting. A fatalpartition (poi. Stanislaw Witkiewicz jako krytyk, jego pojęcia, zasady i teorye w malarstwie. Rozbiór krytyczny). It contains the autograph of the author himself, as well as a brochure On the loose (poi. Na odlocie) published on the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of the January Uprising, where his poem is included. Another artist is Maksymil ian Gierymski (1846-1874). The Museum has his painting entitled Lookout (poi. Czaty). The last insurgent worth mentioning is Maksymilian Oborski (1809-1878). The collection of the Museum of Independence has several of his works from his Siberian period of creativity, for example In the Sleigh (poi. Wsaniach), three depictions of Siberian landscapes — Surroundings ofthe Kyakhta (poi. Okolice Kiachty), Town square in Irkutsk (poi. Rynek w Irkuckie), Siberian Landscape (pol. As can be seen, the paintings of the artists who took part in the January Uprising, whose works are in the collection of the Museum of Independence, are extremely diverse both in style and topic matter. Piotr Maroński The January Uprising in Eastern Wielkopolska Poland in the Pawel Wyskota-Zakrzewski journal Key words The January Uprising, Eastern Wielkopolska, Warta river, border, Prussia Abstract Military operations during the January Uprising proceeded differently in each region. “The land on the Warta River” had a specific geographical loca tion. On one side was Prussia, and on the other were the lands of the Russian partition. During the military operations, the problem was where to make the so-called retreat. The Russian invader treated the insurgent units with terrible cruelty — even the wounded could not hope for mercy. There were also numerous deportations deep into Russia. On the other hand, the in surgents had difficulty getting across the Prussian border and seeking refuge there. Many of them were deserters from the Prussian army. Paweł Wyskota-Zakrzewski, a young officer and eyewitness of those events, describes in his journal the difficulties on the front line and attempts to escape after the fall of the uprising. He acted under the command of Edmund Taczanowski in East ern Wielkopolska, which was detached from the main Wielkopolska land. Pursuant to the decision of the Central National Committee on 24th August 1862, decisions were made on the administrative division of the Kingdom of
Poland. The areas described in the journal included the Kalisz province (the so-called Kalisz land), and the districts of Kalisz, Konin, Sieradz, Piotrków and Wieluń. 470

Krzysztof Dereziński Expedition of the middle school students from Trzemeszno in 1863 Key words Trzemeszno, the January Uprising, Trzemeszno expedition, middle school students, patriotism, Władysław Chotkowski, Roman Kentcer Abstract Trzemeszno, a small town located in the Gniezno Lake District, has a rich history dating back to the beginnings of the Polish State. There are also many outstanding figures associated with Trzemieszno — Colonel Jan Kiliński, who was a hero of the Kościuszko Uprising, or Jędrzej Moraczewski, who was a close associate of Józef Piłsudski and the first Prime Minister after the Rebirth of Poland. The Trzemeszno expedition is an event forever recorded in Polish history. During it, a group consisting of 60 middle school stu dents from Trzemeszno spontaneously set off for the January Uprising. After this, youth found themselves in an insurgent unit commanded by Antoni Garczyński. The unit, in which young insurgents from Trzemeszno fought, participated in battles and skirmishes of Dobrosołów, Mieczownica, Brdów, Nowa Wieś, Olszowa, Ślesin
and Ignacew. The battles ended in defeat. In the Battle of Mieczownica, more than a 100 insurgents were killed, including 11 of the Trzemeszno middle school students. 471

A selection of publications Key words Mogilno area, insurgents, Władysław Ciesielski, penalty, emigration, change of names, publications Abstract Prior to the boundary changes, Mogilno land included following cities: Mogilno, Strzelno and Trzemeszno, as well as the municipalities: Dąbrowa, Jeziora Wielkie and Orchowo. Before the outbreak of the January Uprising, Mogilno had a population little more than 1.5 thousand, and the district ap proximately 30 thousand. Its location right on the Prussian-Russian border was conducive to active participation in the uprising and significant support for its participants. The military hospital opened in Strzelno played a very important role. All those involved in insurgent activity were exposed to se vere punishment by Prussian authorities. Insurgents trying to avoid them often changed their names or emigrated to France, for example Władysław Ciesielski, who was born in Mogilno, a student of the middle school in Trze meszno, emigrated to Paris, and Józef Kaszyński, (from the Mierucin village), changed his name to Gajewski. Other insurgents stood trial, were impris oned, lost their property or were sent to eastern Siberia. This fate befell, among others, the peasant Marcel Kawczyński (Młyny village), the farmhand Franciszek Kurczewski (Trląg village) and Władysław Zbrodowski vel Zrodowski (Strzelno). Quite a number of regional publications have been devot ed to the participation of the Mogilno region’s residents in the uprising, but knowledge of this is scarce
in the wider area. Unfortunately, but on a larger scale, there is little knowledge about it. 472

Memory of the January Uprising in the interwar period Key words The January Uprising, veterans, Józef Pilsudski, historical memory, collective consciousness Abstract The identification of all generations with Polish history was an extremely im portant factor in the formation of national culture and the unification of the entire nation. The nationwide celebrations of the anniversary of the January Uprising, held annually under the auspices of the Polish President Ignacy Mościcki and Polish Marshal Józef Pilsudski (after his death this role was tak en over by Aleksandra Pilsudska), were an excellent tool to raise a generation in the spirit of patriotism. During the interwar period, veterans of 1863 par ticipated in all major patriotic celebrations as guests of honor. Today we can see in archival photographs from that period how they sit in the first rows on the honorary stands, watching military parades, and participate in pa triotic meetings organized for young people. The last celebrations with the participation of several January insurgents, took place in January 1939. The memory of the January Uprising was and is an element of collective memo ry. We can even say that it has transcended the lifetimes of the participants in the events and has become a generational memory. Summaries in English Abstract Józef Pilsudski’s interest in the January Uprising was the result of his fa thers involvement in independence activities and his mothers cultivating the tradition of the insurrection in the family home, as well as the fact that he himself had thoroughly studied the 1863 uprising. All of this resulted in the continuation of military efforts during the years of the Great War (First Cadre Company, Legions, Polish Military Organization — PMO) and the care and respect given to the January veterans after the Rebirth of Poland. The outline about 1863 by Józef Pilsudski was published several times. The first edition was illustrated with drawings by Henryk Minkiewicz and Ed ward Rydz, while subsequent editions were illustrated only by Rydz. It is an exemplary study of generational heritage and the continuation of the inde pendence ethos. Tarnów was in the territory of Austria as of 31st July 1772· The city, located on the then most important communication route in Galicia (the so-called Imperial Route, running from Bielsk in the direction of Wadowice, Boch nia, Tarnów, Przemysl to Lviv), relatively
quickly received information about events from the Russian and Prussian partitions. A similar situation occurred during the national uprisings. Interest in these events in Tarnów and surrounding towns was high. Residents were eager to get involved in helping those fighting, and were not discouraged by the difficulties and the awareness of the consequences in the event of arrest or search. They took part in battles of Chroberz on 17th of March 1863, and a day later, on 18th of March 18, at the battle of Grochowiska. Those willing to fight were not deterred by harsh consequences. In Tarnów and the surrounding area, the number of those arrested for participating in or helping the insurgents was increasing. From 1st of March to 31st of August 1864, The Martial Court in Tarnów conducted 546 investigations against 731 people, of which 438 were com pleted (against 541 people). Celebrations of the 50th anniversary in the light of the local press from 1913 Key words The January Uprising, memory, anniversary celebrations, Tarnów land, press, 19th century, 20th century Abstract The text attempts to present ways of cultivating national memory on the example of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the January Uprising, with particular emphasis on the Tarnów land. The analysis uses one of the sources of the age, namely the local press. Despite the fact that no insurgent battles were recorded in Tarnów itself and its surroundings, many volunteer insurgents came from these areas. Some of them died while fighting for Po land’s freedom and independence. The wounded were brought to Tarnów, and those who were killed and died as a result of their wounds were buried. The insurgent burial mound from 1863, located in the Old Cemetery in
Tarnów, as well as individual graves of insurgents, testifies to the commit ment. The following elements were placed on the mound: The crest with eagle from the January Uprising period, Lithuanian Vytis and Archangel Mi chael. Many insurgents were sentenced to many years in prison, deportation to Siberia, confiscation of property. The memory of the heroes-survivors of this uprising, has survived to modern times (it has been cultivated since the 1860s). This is reflected in both, the material and spiritual spheres. Adam Buława Commanders of partisan military units in insurgent Płock province (1863-1864) Key words Commanders, partisan military units, the January Uprising, Płock province, commandants of the insurgent units, military art Abstract The article is devoted to a specific environment, namely the circle of com manders of armed units of the January Uprising, operating in the insurgent province of Plock (the Russian Plock Governorate) — Płock, Pułtusk, Os trołęka, Mława, Przasnysz and Lipno districts. The text analyzes the activities of commanders of insurgent units with a minimum of 100 men and partici pating in at least one independently conducted battle or skirmish (about 25). The paths of the careers of commanders, coming from different provincial groups (veterans of the November Uprising, emigrants and participants in the wars of 1831-1863, the Austrian army, the Prussian army, the tsarist army, civilians, foreigners) were examined, an attempt was made to analyze the art of war demonstrated in confrontation with the enemy by insurrec tionist commanders. They were divided in this regard into several categories (outstanding, the best and most efficient; those developing command skills or at an average level; unlucky ones who, due to unfavorable circumstances, were unable to demonstrate their skills; great expectations — great disappoint ments, incompetents). The verbal image of the enemy in updated Christmas carols created in relation to the Polish struggle for independence Key words Updated Christmas carols, Russians, Muscovites, tsar, „mochy” (diminutive from the polish word Muscovites (poi. Moskale) Abstract The basic musical pieces that accompanied people every year during the cel ebration of Christmas were carols and pastorals. In the nineteenth century, the creation of carols in the Polish language developed in two basic currents: strictly religious and national. A whole series of updated carols were created as part of the national current. Among other things, they were created during and in connection with the activities of national uprisings, (including the November and January Uprisings), struggles for independence and the shape of Poland’s borders. In updated carols, strictly religious and patriotic themes penetrated. There was a distinction of chronological boundaries. The creators combined biblical and Christmas reality with current characters and events. The main enemy of mankind in these songs was evil, as well as the direct enemy of the Polish population were the Russians. The article shows how Russians, Russia and the Tsar were presented in Polish updated carols written in relation to the November and January Uprisings and during the Great War. The status of the enemy and its presentation during the efforts to re gain Poland’s independence was not unchanged in updated carols. During
the Great War, resentment towards Russia gained additional strength, which can be seen, inter alia, in the dehumanization of the enemy by comparing him to flies that we squash and the use of words such as “Muscovites” and „mochy”. Summaries in English Abstract Colonel Walenty Lewandowski performed the function military and ci vilian head of the Podlasie province from 5th January to 24th March 1863. He was unfairly accused of lack of military experience, low efficiency and wrong decision made. According to some historians, the colonels plan in the spring of 1863, was to finally organize and train insurgents in the Łukowo area to transform the guerrilla into a regular war. Lewandowski was severely wounded in the Battle of Róża; he also survived the uprising and deportation to Siberia. As the conspirational head of the Kansky District, he took part in meetings of conspirators who wanted to separate Siberia from Russia. He was arrested, so he did not take part in the rebellion (which ended in repression). He returned to Poland in 1877. Iwona Stępień The myth of the January Uprising in the works of Stefan Żeromski Key words Myth, the January Uprising, grave, insurgent, battlefield, death, heroism, destruction, suffering Abstract Article topic shows the problem of the myth of the January Uprising in the Stefan Żeromski works (in particular, in the pieces Echoes of the Forest (poi. Echa leśne), Ravens and crows willpeck us to pieces (poi. Rozdziobią nas kruki, wrony.), Faithful river (pol. Wierna rzeka). The main motives, in the works of Żeromski, which are related to the myth of the uprising, are death of an insurgent, a grave, and a battlefield. The independence uprising is pre sented ambiguously, as the author showed the heroic attitudes of the heroes against the background of inhuman suffering and
destruction. On the one hand, Żeromski writes about fighting for the homeland and cultivates the memory of it, while on the other hand he raises questions about the sense of organizing uprisings in the face of an uneven fight against the enemy and the immaturity of peasants to take up the ideological challenge. At the same time, paradoxically, he believes that the defeat of the uprising was an attempt to restore the dignity of the Polish nation. 462

The fate of a young January insurgent based on the diary of Romuald Wilusz (1840-1922) Key words 19th century, Poles in the 19th century, January Uprising, youth in the Jan uary Uprising, the Battle of Miechów, the Battle of Rybnica, the Battle of Jurkowice Abstract The January Uprising was a great independence uprising, in which a signif icant role was played by patriotic young people, brought up in the spirit of the romantic fight for freedom. One of the participants in this uprising was Romuald Wilusz (1840-1922), 23 years old man, and a medical student at the Jagiellonian University. He came from village Błażkowa (brzostecki coun ty). Romuald fought in the Anastazy Władysław Mossakowski and Dionzy Czachowski units. He participated in many operations including the Battle of Miechów (17th February, 1863) and the Battle of Rybnica (20th October 1863). After the defeat in the Battle of Jurkowice (21st October) he was cap tured by the Russians. We can inspect Romuald Wilusz’s insurgent experi ences and reflections through his memoir Memories of the 1863 Uprising and captivity (poi. Wspomnienia z powstania 1863 r. i z niewolt)., which he wrote down on the 50th anniversary of the Uprising (December 1912). The memoir helps to understand the motivations of the young insurrectionists who re ported their readiness to fight in the Uprising, as well as their

Summaries in English Abstract Adam Chmielowski youth, later painter, art critic and theorist, Polish Fran ciscan friar, founder of the congregation of Albertines, and finally a saint of the Catholic Church, was a period of constant patriotic demonstrations by young people. After the closure of the Real Gymnasium in Warsaw (which operated in the stream of the real school), Chmielowski continued his studies at the Polytechnic Institute of Agriculture and Forestry in Puławy, where was just the same patriotic sentiment as in Warsaw. In response to the Central National Committees Manifesto (22ndJanuary 1863), Polish youths formed a „Puławiacy” unit and, under the command of 19-year-old Leon Frankowski, joined the Uprising. After several successes, the unit was broken up by Cos sacks in the Slupcza (village near Sandomierz), while its young commander was hanged in April 1863. The rest of the unit arrived to Holy Cross Mon astery, where they were received by Marian Langiewicz — then head of the armed forces of the Sandomierz province. The cavalrymen, who were lo cated near Grochowiska (to the east of Mielec), tried to cross the Vistula at the Jesuit Mouth (the confluence of the Vistula and the Dunajec), but they were captured by the Austrian. Most of the insurgents, among whom was Chmielowski, were located in the powerful fortress in the Ołomuniec (today this city is located in the eastern part of the Czech Republic), where they were kept under guard by Hungarian hussars. Novel Bobin by Tadeusz Konwicki in the perspective of memory studies Key words Tadeusz Konwicki, post-memory, the January Uprising, Vilnius region, my thologisation, memory of the lost homeland Abstract Tadeusz Konwicki s novel Bohiń is an example of a piece where the autobio graphical convention is used. As in many of his other works, the author plac es a literary alter ego in the plot, while creating the illusion of the truthfulness of the presented story. He creates the fate of his grandmother Konwicki, only later admitting to the reader the thoughtful mystification. Although it is a fictional literary picture of Vilnius region after the fall of the January Uprising, it shows the perspective of a generation born in the interwar period during the mourning after the dramatic defeat of the rebellion. In interviews, Konwicki points to his inspiration for the produced vision of his native re gion in the second half of the 19th century. This article presents the sources used by Konwicki, then analyzes the references to the January Uprising and shows the vision of Vilnius region from the perspective of memory studies, in particular using post-memory theory. Summaries in English Abstract Although the January Uprising never spread to the territories of the Austri an partition, the Poles living there had a significant share in the fate of the insurgents. Information in the literature shows that the two largest urban centers of Galicia, namely Cracow and Lviv, gave shelter to the participants of the uprising during the underground fighting. The same also happened in the villages, where troops were often separated and located in smaller groups on patriotic households. However, the attitude toward the Uprising was not obvious. The Uprising became the object of vigorous political and ideological disputes, which were most concerned with the competition between the Red and White parties and the various groups balancing between them. Signif icant questions were being asked about the goals of the actions taken. The White party feared that the Reds, by their behavior, would lead the national liberation uprising to turn into a social revolution. The Reds, on the other hand, accused the Whites of being passive and conservative, wanting to up hold the existing status quo, hurting the peasantry and poor landed gentry. These and other issues related to the complicated political situation in Galicia during the analyzed period are reflected in the literature of the time, includ ing the prose of Michal Bałucki, Józef Narzymski and, Jan Lam, whose novel A resident of the Kingdom ofPoland in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in Galicia (poi. Koroniarz w Galicji) formed the basis of the analysis. The purpose of the piece is to show how the
political and social discourse related to the January Uprising, as well as the hierarchically ordered social relations prevailing in Galicia, was reflected in literature. Kraj i Litwa pogrążyły się w żałobie narodowej Abstract The outbreak of the uprising of 1863 and the impressment constituted a turning point in the careers of Aleksander Wielkopolski and Grand Duke Konstantin. From that point on, each successive week of the uprising under mined the position of both politicians. The Alvensleben Convention con cluded by Russia and Prussia, contributed to undermining the role of the Refom party in Russia in favor of the party of the so-called “samobytnicy”, which advocated ending the policy of enlisting Poles and silencing the upris ing through drastic measures. Aleksander Wielkopolski was in a lost position from the very beginning. He had no followers in the Kingdom of Poland and was losing the support of the Grand Duke. The Duke, on the other hand, fought for several months to retain his position as Governor and to continue his project of autonomy of the Kingdom of Poland. Aleksander II has decid ed to end his brothers mission in Warsaw. His decision was influenced by the change in the international constellation, the breaking of the Franco-Russian Alliance and the rising wave of anti-Polish sentiment in Russia. Dziewczyna z konwią). The Museum also has a book written by him, published in Krakow, entitled Stanislaw Witkiewicz as a critic, his concepts, principles and theories in painting. A fatalpartition (poi. Stanislaw Witkiewicz jako krytyk, jego pojęcia, zasady i teorye w malarstwie. Rozbiór krytyczny). It contains the autograph of the author himself, as well as a brochure On the loose (poi. Na odlocie) published on the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of the January Uprising, where his poem is included. Another artist is Maksymil ian Gierymski (1846-1874). The Museum has his painting entitled Lookout (poi. Czaty). The last insurgent worth mentioning is Maksymilian Oborski (1809-1878). The collection of the Museum of Independence has several of his works from his Siberian period of creativity, for example In the Sleigh (poi. Wsaniach), three depictions of Siberian landscapes — Surroundings ofthe Kyakhta (poi. Okolice Kiachty), Town square in Irkutsk (poi. Rynek w Irkuckie), Siberian Landscape (pol. As can be seen, the paintings of the artists who took part in the January Uprising, whose works are in the collection of the Museum of Independence, are extremely diverse both in style and topic matter. Piotr Maroński The January Uprising in Eastern Wielkopolska Poland in the Pawel Wyskota-Zakrzewski journal Key words The January Uprising, Eastern Wielkopolska, Warta river, border, Prussia Abstract Military operations during the January Uprising proceeded differently in each region. “The land on the Warta River” had a specific geographical loca tion. On one side was Prussia, and on the other were the lands of the Russian partition. During the military operations, the problem was where to make the so-called retreat. The Russian invader treated the insurgent units with terrible cruelty — even the wounded could not hope for mercy. There were also numerous deportations deep into Russia. On the other hand, the in surgents had difficulty getting across the Prussian border and seeking refuge there. Many of them were deserters from the Prussian army. Paweł Wyskota-Zakrzewski, a young officer and eyewitness of those events, describes in his journal the difficulties on the front line and attempts to escape after the fall of the uprising. He acted under the command of Edmund Taczanowski in East ern Wielkopolska, which was detached from the main Wielkopolska land. Pursuant to the decision of the Central National Committee on 24th August 1862, decisions were made on the administrative division of the Kingdom of
Poland. The areas described in the journal included the Kalisz province (the so-called Kalisz land), and the districts of Kalisz, Konin, Sieradz, Piotrków and Wieluń. 470

Krzysztof Dereziński Expedition of the middle school students from Trzemeszno in 1863 Key words Trzemeszno, the January Uprising, Trzemeszno expedition, middle school students, patriotism, Władysław Chotkowski, Roman Kentcer Abstract Trzemeszno, a small town located in the Gniezno Lake District, has a rich history dating back to the beginnings of the Polish State. There are also many outstanding figures associated with Trzemieszno — Colonel Jan Kiliński, who was a hero of the Kościuszko Uprising, or Jędrzej Moraczewski, who was a close associate of Józef Piłsudski and the first Prime Minister after the Rebirth of Poland. The Trzemeszno expedition is an event forever recorded in Polish history. During it, a group consisting of 60 middle school stu dents from Trzemeszno spontaneously set off for the January Uprising. After this, youth found themselves in an insurgent unit commanded by Antoni Garczyński. The unit, in which young insurgents from Trzemeszno fought, participated in battles and skirmishes of Dobrosołów, Mieczownica, Brdów, Nowa Wieś, Olszowa, Ślesin
and Ignacew. The battles ended in defeat. In the Battle of Mieczownica, more than a 100 insurgents were killed, including 11 of the Trzemeszno middle school students. 471

A selection of publications Key words Mogilno area, insurgents, Władysław Ciesielski, penalty, emigration, change of names, publications Abstract Prior to the boundary changes, Mogilno land included following cities: Mogilno, Strzelno and Trzemeszno, as well as the municipalities: Dąbrowa, Jeziora Wielkie and Orchowo. Before the outbreak of the January Uprising, Mogilno had a population little more than 1.5 thousand, and the district ap proximately 30 thousand. Its location right on the Prussian-Russian border was conducive to active participation in the uprising and significant support for its participants. The military hospital opened in Strzelno played a very important role. All those involved in insurgent activity were exposed to se vere punishment by Prussian authorities. Insurgents trying to avoid them often changed their names or emigrated to France, for example Władysław Ciesielski, who was born in Mogilno, a student of the middle school in Trze meszno, emigrated to Paris, and Józef Kaszyński, (from the Mierucin village), changed his name to Gajewski. Other insurgents stood trial, were impris oned, lost their property or were sent to eastern Siberia. This fate befell, among others, the peasant Marcel Kawczyński (Młyny village), the farmhand Franciszek Kurczewski (Trląg village) and Władysław Zbrodowski vel Zrodowski (Strzelno). Quite a number of regional publications have been devot ed to the participation of the Mogilno region’s residents in the uprising, but knowledge of this is scarce
in the wider area. Unfortunately, but on a larger scale, there is little knowledge about it. 472
