Summary The Memorial of the Kralice Bible The advent of book printing in the mid-fifteenth century marked the beginning of an information revolution that allowed the spread of written texts among broad sections of the population and stim ulated the growth of education and literacy throughout Europe. The oldest surviving book printed in Bohemia is probably the Statutes written in Latin by Ernst of Pardubice (Pilsen 1476); other print ing houses were in operation in Vimperk (1484), Prague (1487) and Kutná Hora (1489). From I486, the printer Konrad Stahel worked in Moravia, plying his trade together with Matthias Prenlein in Brno. During the 16th century, about 75 printers practised the so-called “black craft” in Bohemia, and around half that number in Moravia. Book printing also led to the unification of liturgical texts and the creation of linguistic rules. In the Czech environment, this essential role was played by the bible produced in the printing house of Unitas Fratrum (the Unity of the Brethren) in Kralice. Its language became the basis of modern standard Czech. From 1579 to 1620, the Editorial Centre of the Unity of the Brethren had its seat at the Kralice chateau. During this period, as many as sixty book titles came out from the local printing press. The Unity of the Brethren had never been remarkable for the number of its members, yet during the 16th century they managed to achieve the status of a respected minority church in a non-Catholic environment, recognized for standing firm in their faith and being passionate about education in religious matters. The
Brethren immediately realized the possibilities sparked by the invention of book printing. A documented record written by the university master Václav Koranda jr. in 1473 indicates that “impressors” were engaged in the Brethren’s service. This Church had indeed used the services of like-minded printers in the Bohemian and German lands for a long time. After the Estates Revolt was suppressed in 1547, the centre of non-Catholic book printing moved to Moravia. In 1562, at the instigation of Jan Blahoslav, the Brethren established their own printing house in Ivančice. Blahoslav worked there as an author and editor until his death. In 1564, his translation of the New Testament was published in the Ivančice printing house, becoming the basic text of the future edition of the Kralice Bible. The Mandate of Rudolf II from 1577 against non-Catholics in Moravia forced the Unity of the Brethren to move the printing house to the chateau in Kralice, where the Brethren were provided with protection and support by the Zierotin family of counts. The most important publishing pro ject of the Kralice printing house was the edition of the complete Czech translation of the Bible, the first one not based on the Latin Vulgate but on original biblical languages. The Bible edition was prepared by a group of scholars from the Unity of the Brethren following up on the work of Jan Blahoslav, with Ondřej Štefan as his main continuator. The outstanding typographer Zacharias Solin Slavkovský took over the typographical supervision of the prestigious edition project. Six volumes of Bible česká emerged
from the Kralice printing press in 1579-1594 and in addition to the six-volume edition, the Kralice Bible was published twice (1596 and 1613) in a single volume. These more concise editions without comments and prefaces to individual volumes were intended for lay readership. Its high literary qualities promoted the Kralice Bible to the position of the “lin guistic treasure” of humanistic Czech, which played its role in the codification of the modern stan dard language in the 19th century. Almost the entire production of the Kralice printing house was intended for the needs of the con gregations of the Unity of the Brethren. Although the Brethren did not specify the place of issue in the books it is difficult to imagine that the operation of the printing house with a library, a bindery 136 !
and other service facilities attached to it, as well as the permanent or temporary residence of up to several dozen leading members of the Unity of the Brethren, could escape attention. The Kralice printing house can thus be perceived as an institution not secret, but at least tolerated, and moreover protected by the authority of the Zierotins as members of the high land nobility. The last known print from Kralice has the date inscription 1619. Shortly after the Battle of White Mountain, Charles the Elder of Zierotin had the equipment of the printing house stored in the neigh bouring Náměšť nad Oslavou, from where it was transported via Přerov to Leszno in 1629. The Re naissance chateau in Kralice ceased to exist after 1628. The Memorial of the Kralice Bible owes its rich collections mainly to the legacy of the former Mu seum Association for the Preservation of Monuments and Prints of the Unity of the Brethren, the statutes of which were approved by the Provincial Authority in Brno on 2 February 1935. From the beginning, the acquisitions made by the Association focused mainly on the prints from Kralice and Ivančice, and more generally on other old, rare and precious books of the Czech Reformation. A number of donations were directed to museum funds and the committee also actively purchased old prints at auctions. The first major exhibitions of these acquisitions took place in the Sokol gym nasium in Kralice during the German occupation. In 1940, the Association organized a display titled the Bible and the Czech Nation. A year later, an exhibition was held in the same
place to commem orate the 500th anniversary of the development of book printing. After the liberation, new possibilities opened up for the Association, given the importance that official sites attached to the traditions of the Czech Reformation. After visiting Kralice in 1946, the President of the Republic, Edvard Beneš, made a financial donation, which enabled the Association to redeem part of the stronghold. Even after the takeover of power by the communists, the Associa tion managed to maintain its independent existence, but at the cost of being actively involved in the propaganda actions of the Stalinist regime. It is enough to simply recall the names of some exhibi tions from this period such as From the White Mountain to the Abolition of Serfdom (1951) or The Hussite Revolution in Moravia (1952). In 1954, the Association handed over its collections to the then Moravian Museum. However, they retained their immovable assets, i.e. above all the land on which the Kralice stronghold was situated. The continuity of the course of development that had been adopted until then was ensured by the distinctive personality of Dr. Vlasta Fialová (1896-1972), who led the historical department of the Moravian Museum and at the same time served as vice-chair of the Association. Under her leadership, in 1956, an archaeological survey of the Kralice stronghold began, which uncovered parts of the original masonry of the complex, architectural elements, ceramics, coins as well as an unexpectedly large number of lead letters, bronze pins and other typographic material documenting the
operation of the printing house. In 1964, members of the Association and local citizens concluded an agreement to self-build a new museum in the centre of the town, near the historic church and excavations of the stronghold. The architectural and urban design of the Memorial of the Kralice Bible was developed by the significant Brno architect Bohuslav Fuchs (1895-1972). The construction started in 1965 and was largely selfbuilt, which led to delays and technical shortcomings. The stone lining of the building was to follow the local tradition; in addition, original boulders from the Renaissance chateau were used in the construction. The art historian Zdeněk Kudělka (1926-2000) interpreted this last work of Fuchs as a building that took over the function of a defunct stronghold, including some attributes, such as the materials used and a simple rectangular ground plan. Thus, with regard to the function of the building, the more general metaphor of the monument/museum as a “stronghold” of culture and spirit suggests itself, being visualized with simple and supremely modern means of expression. The ceremonial opening of the Memorial took place on 28 September 1969. ! 137 |
