| Zusammenfassung: | This documentary examines the history of feature film making in South Africa, with regard to filmic treatment of that's country's apartheid policies and their social impact. In particular it examines Hollywood's influence on South African cinema and society, and how filmmakers' attitudes towards South Africa and its black-white relations have changed over time. The first program covers the years after World War II to the Sharpeville Massacre in March 1960; the second program from that date to the present. Films examined as historically significant include Cry, The Beloved Country (1951), Untamed, (1955), The Anatomy of Apartheid (1960), The Wilby Conspiracy (1974), The Gods Must Be Crazy (1979), and Cry Freedom (1988). Black and white directors, writers, actors and activists are interviewed. / This award-winning film examines the role of cinema in both supporting and attacking apartheid. Includes newsreel footage of violence in South Africa and interviews with writers, directors, and actors, including Lewis Nkosi, Zakes Mokae , Sir Richard Attenborough , Lionel Rogosin , Thomas Mogotlane , Andre Brink and Euzhan Palcy [www.worldcat.org] |
